Half Engine Lights - Need Codes Read

So I got a yellow half engine light about 3-4 days ago. I've been reading all the posts on here about the light and I've made a list of possible scenarios and the consensus seems to be that you should get all your codes read before taking the car in.

Would a place like autozone be able to read the codes on my car? I don't have a BT tool and no one nearby has one either to read my codes, I wanted to get them read before going into the dealer.

For those that would like to know what happened here is the scenario: The temperature got really warm outside all of a sudden so I put the car to map 5 with 93 octane and decided to go out and have some fun. I was driving in M1 and M2 a lot and red lining it enjoying the sound of my motor since I haven't been able to do that much. After about just 3-4 runs of doing this a yellow half engine light showed up on my dash. I didnt have any shudders and I'm not sure if I had reduced power because I began to accelerate very catiously and drive pretty slow.

What I hope it is? I had 93 octane BP gas in the tank because thats the gas station that was right beside my storage that I had my car in for 3 weeks. The thank was about 1/8 full when I was doing the runs so I'm hoping it has something to do with that... (probably being too hopeful)

I will fill up the car and try to get the codes read and maybe make a post about what happened so other people can search it up.

Autozone would be able to hook up a code reader. They probably won't clear the codes for you, but at least you'll know what your dealing with. There's a chance that if your CEL goes out, the codes may clear.

I threw a CEL a few weeks ago because my turbo bypass valve came loose. After I hooked it up, all the codes cleared themselves.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm not really looking to clear the codes I just needed to get them read so I get an idea of what I'm dealing with and if it was just something small or if I have a bigger issue I'm dealing with.

I will probably get this done today and then see how things go.

No problem...I'm interested in hearing which codes got thrown; it's always good to know.

i just threw a red half engine light (or yellow - i don't care).

just got my JB4 installed on Sunday and i was running Map 1. placed it on Map 2 before i left work, drove it 21 miles and then nailed it in my subdivision.

half engine and service engine light came on half way through 3rd gear. it was shuttering all the way home - about half a mile down the road.

long story short, i got my shitbox sitting in my garage with possibly a bad fuel pump........

That isn't an actual code. Did you read it through the JB4 laptop interface? Just email BMS and they'll walk you through it. Sounds like a fuel pump but could also be VANOS, injector, coil, etc, so those codes will really narrow it down.

well, i did the whole option 1, setting 1 thing.

guages just kept sweeping to different numbers and the hazards kept blinking.

i recorded the entire process weith my phone, but it didn't show me any codes.

probably did something wrong - only had my JB4 for 2 days HAHA !!!

oh well, buddy is coming back tonight to remove it so i can tow it to a dealer tomorrow. i should be ok, car is still under warranty.

You paid for world class support from BMS. Might as well use it. Could save you a lot of time. Email them the code video then.

Did you read the codes and verify none were tuner codes? Delete all to see what comes back up stock, etc?

i deleted them once on Tuesday night.

started the car a few times afterwards to see if the "problem would go away" (/wishfull thinking)

then last night i ran the code check again with my buddy sitting in the passenger side watching the gauges sweep. right afterwards i went to option 2 to delete the codes.

after that he started removing the JB4.

THEN, after it was all put back to stock we drove the car around the block and parked it back into my garage.

OK phew, at least there was one delete in there. For codes you can read them right from the laptop too. Directions for reading the in dash and laptop are both on BMS' site. Very easy to do. My only concern in your case would be since you didn't actually read them, what if they were a loose JB4 wire for example?

ok, got an update:

ignition coil cylinder #4 was showing up as a code - that was fixed

hpfp got replaced also with the "446 model" - tech said he's never seen a 446 fail after initial install

now, funny thing: while programing the car, he was having a hard time programing the audio in my car - looks like the stock amp in the car is blown HAHA !!!! that will be replaced also.

getting my car back on Monday. would have gotten it back today but the programming wasn't working for him

oh well, looks like i'll be bawlin in my 2011 4-cylinder Malibu rental this weekend lol.

p.s.
he said the hpfp code wasn't even showing, but he's obligated to change it.

what are the possible causes of ignition coil failure !?!?

theyre also replacing my in-cabin filter and changing my brakes/wear indicators.

The coils crap out all the time so not surprised there. Strange on the fuel pump though!

When you put the JB4 back in be sure to update to the newest firmware at the same time. And route the USB cable in to the engine bay for easier code reads next time.

Not always, but the 2/2 update had a couple important fixes in it. Worth the update.

could you advise the important fixes?
