I need a coilover system!!

I recently had h&r sport springs installed. At first I thought the ride was great, it handled much better and bounce wasnt that bad. The only issue I had was it was a little too low for my taste.Yesterday I went over the sagamore bridge and because of the expansion plates it was bouncing uncontrollably and it rubbed for the first time. It never rubs during normal driving and even aggrssive turning etc. I have a 25 offset with 275's on an e90.This is the only time Ive ever heard it rub. I might have been going too fast for this particular bump/dip.I can get koni yellows and it should be fine but it still will be too low. What kind of coilover do you guys recommend and how hard is the install? thanks in advance for any advice.

The best coilovers out there, especially in your situation, would have to be the KW coilovers. They come in three variants so that you have a choice of which one to go with based on your driving styles. Here's a quick overview of which one you should go with:

KW Variant 1 - Street Preferred, Daily Driving, For Show (Height Adjustable)
KW Variant 2 - Well-Rounded, Street Preferred, Occassional Tracking is Great (Height and Rebound Adjustable)
KW Variant 3 - Track Preferred, Perfect for Tracking Enthusiasts (Height and Individual Rebound Adjustable for the finest tuning in suspension)

We are an authentic authorized distributor of KW Coilovers, providing you with amazing benefits and prices that no one else can match!

James I don't think you should comment on the track performance of those CO if you don't actually have experience with them. Two of the local members have commented on how "garbage" they are at the track, one has V2 and one has V3, not exactly sure why though.

With that said, I would suggest KW Street Comfort or Bilstein PSS10 for the OP.

Ive riden in 3 different E90/E92 with 3 different suspensions in it. My E92 with KW V2 still rides great after a yr of it on. Recently drove a E92 with Bilstein PSS10 w/the new electronic dampening and have nothing but good things to say about that too. On the same day drove a E90 with H&R coilovers and they also rode great also.

The KW V2 adjustability is your typical coilover adjustability. Same with the Bilstein other than the electronic dampening. But what surprised me was the E90 with the H&R adjustability on the rear. Its as simple as it gets as it utilizes a large hex key underneath the arms and with a turn your ride height is adjusted.

Either way, I think you'll be happy with any of those 3 choices I just gave.

I'm not sure if coilovers would help because even at the least aggressive setting, you'll still be at about the same drop as the H&R sport springs. The front will be .1" higher and the rear will be about .3" higher. While that might help, I'm just not certain if the differences are enough to cure the rubbing issue.

Well if you're really after track, I'd say go Cross Coilovers or KW clubsport - for a true dedicated track car. GenE92 can you post a link to thread you are talking about? I find it odd as KW just set the Nurburgring record again with a Viper this time around.

My personal vote is a KW Variant 2 so you can adjust it, if you are looking for a more comfortable ride, then go with the KW Street comfort. Koni Yellows won't change you're current ride hight much and would be a far more inexpensive solution. Other options include Bilstein PSS9/10. Fotios let us know if we can help

i don't find that to be the case. if you're going by h&r's published numbers, when i had h&r sports on my e90, the car was lower than their numbers.

i currently have ST coilovers on my e90. they're basically the same as KW v1, but use a galvinized sleeve instead of stainless steel that's used on the kw's. at one time i had the height set the same as when i had my h&r's and i could make the car higher if i had to.

OP, you should consider rolling your rear fenders if you haven't already. 275's with a 25mm offset and 9.5" wide wheel is fairly aggressive.

Yup I went by the published numbers. I'm not sure how H&R measures the drop- averaging or posting the least drop- but going by the published numbers the difference is minimal. Obviously none of us knows exactly how low the OP's car is dropped so we can only base it off of the published numbers.

going by my own experience and having seen bay area members with h&r sport springs on their e9x's, imho it would not be accurate to go by the published numbers as it is always lower than what h&r published.

and you really can't compare the numbers published between two different manufacturers. there's no way of telling if the way company A measured the difference is the same a company B.

i disagree the difference is minimal. when looking at suspension heights, even a 1/4" difference is very noticeable.

Well both companies base their measurements off of a stock vehicle with standard sport suspension. Unless they are severely incompetent at measuring or BMW's tolerances for differences in ride height varies more than a few mm, I would say the numbers are comparable.

I agree with the aforementioned, based on the numbers, the difference between the average H&R sport drop and KW V2 drop would be minimal. With that said, there are differences between cars such as what is loaded into the vehicle and tire brand/size that can make or break rubbing.

I would not quote, let alone compare, manufacturer's estimated heights between each other. Fortunately, a lot of comparisons have been observed in the Bay Area, where the number of variances in models are large.

As we know, these suspension manufacturers publish their heights on an estimate. Therefore, as you agree, the differences can vary within a few millimeters. To see that length on a ruller is petty, but when a car's height is varied by that much, the difference is noticable.

even if you want to go by published numbers, h&r sports publishes a drop of 1.2" while kw v1's publishes a drop range of 0.9-2.1". just comparing the minimum drop of the kw v1's of 0.9" with the h&r's, that's 0.3" difference. sure, that may not look huge when just looking at the numbers, but that's more than quarter of an inch. imho, that is not minimal and even noticeable when looking at it. (i only compared the rear since the OP is only concerned with rubbing in the rear)

that said, he'd also get a better suspension setup with coilovers, especially with the car currently using stock zsp shocks with the h&r's.

pretty much your stock shocks are going out and will not be able to handle the additional spring weight of the the H&R sports. Thus the reason why you're bouncing around. A set of konis would be better and even better a c/o setup.

As for a personal exp:

My front rubbed like a mutha for a few weeks. My fenders are rolled and i run a VERY aggressive offset. I checked my c/o's (kw v3) and found that both compression/rebound was at normal (middle) settings. I increased the compression to 2 clicks from hardest and did not adjust the height. This solved the rubbing issue and i have not once rubbed over bumps/dips since.

What am i trying to say? I don't know...i never do. Height isn't everything, it matters on other factors to get to a good ride. To be honest, your H&R sports aren't that low and it seems like you're shocks/struts are going out soon. Might want to invest in a new setup.

I have the JIC Cross coil-overs and UUC adjustable sway bars.

I've gotten quite a bit of mileage on them now and it is fantastic. The car is so controlled in all situations. It is never nervous or jittery, especially in mid-corner bumps. It just reacts SO fast. The ride is definitely firm, but if the wife can handle it - it can't be that bad and it's not.

On the track the car is set up to be neutral. It grips and grips and grips! Not many cars could keep up with me in the turns (nothing with stock suspension came close). Playing with the throttle in long radius turns you could definitely feel the balance shift front to rear. I could not get the car to oversteer, it's just hooked. The GY Asymmetrics may be helping with that as well. Braking and body roll and perfect. There is no nose dive when you hit the brakes hard and the roll is only slight and it grabs.

All in all, I have very pleased with this set-up. I would recommend a professional to install as they come with camber plates and are more of a race set-up.

James @ **********s will hook you up just like he did me!

I've been considering the JIC Cross setup, but I'm having a hard time getting past the "30 Day warranty" vs. the warranty offered by KW and Bilstein. Of course, TC Kline basically says they offer no warranty on their setup. I'm just worried about a shock blowing out when it shouldn't......

Hi Scollins,

I spoke to the owner of JIC Cross about that. The '30 day warranty' is out of respect for abuse, if its something like abnormal like it randomly starts leaking or something and if you buy from an authorized dealer - the warranty can be pushed to as as much as 1 year. Which we have agreed with them, I will point out they have a mechanism inside the shock if it was used outside of normal bounds (ie car lands into a ditch).

So the concern of a shock blowing out is just about a non-issue we can get you taken care of, as well as if work is needed on you're system we can always get single components replaced on the JIC Cross.
