iDrive just died...

Not exactly a ///M car but will post this for opinions/experience anyway since all newer Bimmers have iDrive...(hoping this won't happen to you of course)

The iDrive in my wife's 06 330i recently just died. Basically, didn't start up as usual when you fire up the car. There are moments that it came back up for a few minutes before the screen started fading and eventually went dead again. What REALLY sucks about this is the loss of most convenience features...stereo, parking sensors, phone connectivity...all gone. This is with the SOS light on as an indicator.

I did some research and tried the 3-button reset, didn't work. It might have cleared the SOS light, but no effect to the iDrive unit.

Has this happened to you? Or aware of any fixes? Just want to get the public opinions, before dealers or shops rip me apart.

That happened to me about a month ago, I started up the car and the idrive was totally dead. I swore up and down for the next ten minutes of my commute but then it just suddenly reset itself and started working fine again. I haven't had any troubles since then. I know that's not very helpful but if this only happened today then I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

Did you try disconnecting the battery and resetting everything?

Huh?

iDrive is only on cars with navigation (or navigation is only available on cars with iDrive)

As far as your issue is concerned, find the fuse that controls iDrive/nav, pull it and replace it. If that doesn't fix it then you'll need to go to the dealership.

The latter is true, the former is not

If you can show it messed up live to the technicians that is best. Based on my experience, I bet they may need to replace the CCC unit. It's pricey so they want good evidence your Navi is bad.

In the US, on a 3 series?

Other markets have the iDrive as a stand alone option. I didn't know it was available as an option without nav on a 3 series in the US.

If you end up getting it replaced.....you might as well do a CIC retrofit and upgrade to the newer unit.

Probably about the same price if not cheaper than what the dealer would charge.

This won't be covered under CPO.....

I am pretty happy that I don't have Idrive. I was afraid of this.

Did you ever get it to work? If so what was the solution

Sadly, the fix was a $800 replacement by dealer...CCC was entirely dead, perfect timing as warranty expired shortly before then...

If this ever happens to my M3, I will just update it to the 2012 iDrive rather than sticking with CCC....

There are plenty of CCC navigation kits on ebay since a lot of people here have upgraded theirs to the CIC. You could probably find a nice used setup for about $500-600.

I was able to pin point the problem with mine, theres no power to the CCC unit, does that mean I need a new unit?
