Cool Itunes problems

Sorry this is a bit of a 'carlos' type question. I have googled but come up with bugger all................ Calling all iPod owners

Here's me dragging myself into the 21st century! I brought an iPod Video 30Gig this morning. In preparation for its arrival I downloaded Itunes, converted all the music from my Laptop into Itunes and then inserted a music CD with the intention of importing the tracks ............

At about half way through the Import process (I selected all the tracks and dragged to the 'Library') my Laptop turns itself off. It has happened three times now. Is there something simple that I am doing which may be causing this??

This has a tenuous link to BMWs I brought the Ipod for my new 335d

Thanks, this isnt the Laptop hibernating, it is the laptop switching completely off. Last time I was actually on the internet when it was importing the tracks when it went dead.

It has now been on for about 2 hours, with Itunes shut down, and it hasnt repeated. I am going to download Itunes on my desktop PC tomorrow and see if the same thing happens. I wondered if there was a known software issue with the latest Itunes.

Not had problems with iTunes.

Are you connected via wireless or wired? Sounds like your network card could be shutting down the laptop.

Try disabling the network card and then try ripping the CD.

Are you using a USB lead? It might be power...I know you can get issues with USB devices and power.

Do you get any error message?

If you check your event log (under Administrative Tools, Event Viewer) do you see any errors around the time of shutdown?

A quick scour of net hasn't revealed anything.....

First off I suggest altering itunes preferences so that it automatically imports any cd that you stick in the drive.

Open itunes and select 'edit' then 'preferences' then click on the 'advanced' tab.

Click on importing and highlight 'import CD' on the drop down menu.

Click OK to close the menu and insert the cd. i-tunes should automatically rip it to your library.

Ensure your laptop is on mains power and the power saving settings are set to 'always on'.

Are you sure the screen hadn't just switched off? NFS's comment about power settings would of resolved this for you by never switching the screen off when on mains power.

It was definately not just the screen switching off, the whole laptop had been powered off and required a complete reboot. My daughter has just told me that it has also happened to her when she plays the 'SIMS' on my machine.

I suspect it was power saving settings however they shouldn't cause the whole thing to shut down abruptly they should either hibernate or just power down and allow to be powered up again.

Did you put the laptop on mains power when it worked or change the power setting to always on or what?

So you told it to burn automatically on insert of a CD rather than manually and the problem went away? Something doesn't seem right about that. Glad if it is fixed tho!

The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.
