Calling all experts what you think this is ...

The engine was hot and just drove 10 miles...

Car is a 330i with 100k bought it with 65k on it.. never had any issues (other than a stuck thermostat)...


And never had a valve train "tick"..

what do you all think..

Honestly it could be a multitude of things, but a guess of the sound would either be a connecting rod bearing or even the connecting rod its self. Doesn't sound good at all...

Yep rod is what I am thinking also. Going to slap a new (used) engine in it...

Probably be cheaper to pull the old and see if it's as simple as a rod bearing. If it isn't then you can spring for the replacement motor.

Just as a follow up...

It was the AC compressor..

The bottom the engine looked fine.
