If you can do a swap on a modern day BMW let me know. I would love to have the only 5 series diesel in the US.

As you know I'm sure, getting everything to fit isn't really a problem, especially since nowadays a lot of models have many motor options. So that leaves the electronics (well, and sourcing all the parts $$). If I do attempt it, I'll definitely have some posts about it. I'm still interested in the supercharger option from ESS; unfortunately we haven't heard anything from Gavin, so either his s/c project is on a massive hold or flat out cancelled.

Thinking I'm gonna be right behind you brother- but most likely an older CPO with that sweet V8. Should be at a sweet price then

He responded by asking me if it would be worth their while to develop a SC kit for our cars! I couldn't believe it.
Based on his response, PLEASE contact ESS if you are interested! Let them know it'd be worth while for them to develop this kit.

Contact them at support@esstuning.com or call 480-389-4377.

Here is his exact response:
We are contemplating making a SC kit for the N52 engine, something that brings it up to the 350-400hp range with a price in the $5K ballpark. Do you think there is enough market to support a product like this? The system will work on the E9x, Z4 and X3 platform.

You need to read the rest of the thread. I've been in touch with them a number of times, but they will not make a determination before this fall. I've tried pushing for more details, but have been shut down at this point because nothing else is public.

The last we've officially heard is that they're 75% certain that they're going to produce a kit and that they'll make the determination this fall. I've tried asking if they were thinking of a twin-screw or centrifugal blower but they're not ready to share that obviously.

I had my doubts early and I still do. I'm still hoping for some more info in the near term, but unfortunately they don't have anything to share. I've presented a plan to limit some of their initial risk and I'll share whatever information I get when I can.

I read somewhere that the material of N52 block is not FI friendly.
That's a reason why they build a different block for 335i N54/N55.

I'm wondering if I got the right info..

Speculation only about FI. Maybe not as strong as the 335 block but how many failures have there been in the N52 blocks? None? I guess we will have to see. Will most likely be fine at targeted HP.

This is a long story. BMW was unclear on the specifics in the decision not to use Lighter/more expensive Magnesium in the turbo variants.

They are specifically quoted as saying the new material was "not as suitable." That comment can be construed in many different ways.

I can't imagine low boost applications (≤8 psi) popping the aluminum sleeved n52.

Time will tell

There are already 2 supercharger systems available w/one build reviewed in this forum. There hasen't been any engine failures reported yet. I'm just waiting for ESS to come out with theirs because I want a fully supported system in North America...

I saw another supercharger system posted here but it was priced at 9k euros.
I think it is being sold in europe and uses the same type of supercharger that Jackson racing is using (Rotrex) SP?

That European kit at $8,900 Euros includes installation and tuning. They flat out say that it's not available for shipping on the product page.
Quote:
Price includes installation and mapping.
We can pick up and bring back the car.

The offer is only for stock engine and ECU

Only with installation, no shipping !
So unless you plan on heading to their shop in Holzminden, Germany, that one isn't an option.

it'll be nice to have a N52 supercharged E91 stateside.

-NA + Supercharger. The topic that's been discuss'd since 2006.
ESS would have to sell alot of these for them to consider.
and what kind of warranty would they provide.
lot of decisions for a company to make.

i'm routing for you guys.
good luck.

For who is interested, my most recent response from ESS is basically what I've been expecting to run into:

They're just not ready to discuss anything. I think we pretty much knew this, I was just trying to push a little bit, but with no success.

Quote:
We are currently completely tied up with the release of our S85 and N62 kits. As soon as we are done with these later this fall we will look into the N52.
So that's that until later this fall. I suppose in a couple months we can start a new thread, but I think this one is dead until then. Like I mentioned earlier, I presented a development plan-based group buy with deposit to offset some of their risk, but it's just too early for them.

Sorry folks. I know waiting is the worst part, but what else is new. This looks like a Spring 2012 kit if we're lucky.

Doesn't surprise me. That being said, if ESS is up for a group buy in the near future, I'm down for it.

I guess I appreciate the "rooting" for us, but it sounds like you haven't read the thread.

Again, I'm not going to get into the "would have to sell a lot" argument. You can look for my previous post on their history if you want. For now, I'll just say we have enough -serious- interest (ie: willing to throw down a deposit) for them to look forward to producing a kit. Even without any guaranteed initial sales, they're 75% sure they want to produce the kit.

And why would you think this S/C system would be any different from all their others? Fact is, it'd be exactly the same with the same Standard 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty that comes on all their "street supercharging systems."

You're right in that a S/C kit for the N52 provides a lot of cool options, but it's not such a long shot. The problem is just the wait.

i've read the thread - i've read all the supercharge'd threads.
I've moved up from my NA - but always look for the next
big performance mod for it regardless.

ESS has the potential to sell more N52 kits than any of their other newer or older kits. It would be interesting just how many of their older kits they have sold. But I am sure that there are many more N52 vehicles than all the other older BMWs out there.
