i'm seriously considering an SUV at this point for hauling stuff around, random cheap furniture trips (M is a PIA to haul around IKEA boxes), moving stuff in/out of storage, etc.

i think a 2011 Jeep Cherokee would probably suffice, but i'm looking for something luxurious and comfortable when taking camping or to the snow as well.

anyone consider the new cayenne then change their mind and get an X5 or vice versa? would love to hear your thoughts!

Cayenne > X5 > everything else lol.

The reason I prefer the Cayenne is because X5's are too damn common. Honestly if you get one you would need to make sure it's M-sport at least.

Personally i would go for the x5 instead of the cayenne. When i went into the cayenne not to long ago i felt like it was smaller and overwhelmed by the immense amount of buttons inside. I just love the simple iDrive and interior layout of the x5

I was in your exact situation when i was shopping for a new car. I was looking at the cayenne turbo and x5m though not the hybrid and 50i.

X5 has a better motor (570 tq with Dinan tune). Porsche uses the supercharged V6 from the Audi S4. The new Touareg Hybrid has the same drivetrain and it's smooth but slow. Good for relaxed driving.

If you do get the Cayenne make sure to spec the full leather option. It's great

Easily the Cayenne. They drive like the X5 should and I've never been fond of the E70 X5's interior. Looks a bit too 1 series for me.

I own one of the new Cayennes and can tell you that it is the same chassis as the new Toureg, but it's suspension was developed solely by Porsche.

Is it better than the X5?

In one word .......... absolutely. My brother ran an X6 before I got the Cayenne so I have a very good seat time experience in both cars and can tell you that the differences are remarkable, the Cayenne doesn't get knocked off line by bumps in mid corner like the X6 did. Then there is the quality of the ride, admittedly one is air suspension and the other not but with the Cayenne the 20" rims offers near limo levels of ride in comfort setting at normal ride height setting and offers a brilliant compromise between both comfort and handling when set in normal mode, btw the ride height is important here because set in it's lowest setting the Cayenne becomes almost as unsettled as what the X6 is.

Cornering speeds in the Cayenne is also unbelieveable, I can take corners damn near as quickly as I did in the S4 and it feels just as light on it's feet, in fact the quicker you go the better it becomes. Not taking anything away from the X5 or BMW but in comparison the Cayenne is in a league above when it comes to balancing it's ride, steering, handling and braking feel.

P.S.
The only fly in the ointment in my opinion is the hybrid, I drove it at launch and felt it wasn't as smooth between both systems as it really should be. Having the option of the diesel and the hybrid I chose the diesel but then again you mightn't have that option open to you.

Cayenne.

I would drive the H and the S if I were you. If you are looking for MPG the H wins by a nose or two.

If you want a better feel/drivers SUV the S will win you over and it will get up and go too.

Toss each of them around while on the test drives and you should notice it.

I would take either over the X. The XM is a beast but my gosh it consumes fuel like I do cold beer.

Reviews of the Cayenne are what they are.

If you have the oppurtunity to test drive, please do!!! I would recommend a Cayenne as its off road capability is better then X5 thus suiting your needs. Plus, as other users pointed out, Cayenne's feel is tad better then X5.

It looks like I am going to echo what others have said, but...

I had a first gen. Cayenne S, and currently have an X5d (the wifes dd). The Cayenne is smaller, it is built better, it is more fun to drive and handles better. Out on the highway the X5 is a more comfortable, if you are hauling stuff the X5 will fit more stuff and the cargo area of the X5 seems to be a bit more suited for hauling, meaning I was always more concerned about doing damage to the Cayenne's interior when I put stuff in it (I think its because the headliner comes down farther and the sloping roof line in the Cayenne.

OP, I would encourage you to test drive the Diesel X5. If you are looking for an only car the Cayenne can't be beat.

The Cayenne's sloping roof keeps large strange shapes from fitting well. I am 6'2" and when I folded down the back seats to fit large stuff I had to move the drivers seat so far forward that it was uncomfortable/difficult to drive.

With the crap that I currently haul around, large wheeled stroller car seats etc, the Cayenne would feel a bit more cramped.

You need to remember that the Cayenne also comes with a movable rear seat that slids forward if you need to increase the space in the boot. Here's pics explaining this.




I have used my cayenne to transport the whole family (5) complete with a collapable wheelchair, 2 large suitcases, 2 medium suitcases and 3 sportsbags. Trust me the boot is accommodating.

If vertical loads are you're main concern then neither the Cayenne or X5 are that great, sure the X5 offers more height but it's not perfect in this respect and at best only a little better than the Porsche. As far as I'm concerned the sheer quality of everything else about the Porsche far outweight any possible negatives.

As for the sliding seats also available with the X5, OK I'll give you that one but at least it's free with the Porsche.
