best way to clean your exhaust tip from the black residue

use brillo pad, the one with the built in soap.......shit works wonders, also use it on rims if you guys have and small black dots built up anywhere

i used it on my e92 cause the tips would still be black no matter how much i would try to get it off while washing my car........then someone told me about it and i tried it

I have polished stainless tips. I use easy off lemon oven cleaner. Works very well. After theyre clean I use a stainless polish to give a little protection.

Mr Clean magic erasers work wonders on a lot of car stuff.

My chrome rims on my truck always get weird spots from the winter. Takes a ton of elbow grease to get them off with a rag, but couple wipes with the magic eraser and they are gone....

Holy crap! Don't use it on your rims! That will scratch the clear coat right off.

I've been using 2000 grit sandpaper (I know, it sounds a little crazy) and wetswnding them when just washing doesn't get the grit off. Then i polish them and it seems to be working pretty good. I'll have to try some of the other methods out there.

If what you're using is truly only a polish, it won't provide any protection whatsoever. You'll need something that has sealant or wax in it that can withstand the heat of exhaust.

Optimum Metal Polish works well for me!

Clean with soap and water first.

Just so I'm clear, the topic is how to clean the soot, carbon black crap for inside and inner edge of the exhaust. Metal polish, soap and water will not - or rather has not - done anything in the ways of removing the soot from the pipes on 2 different cars of mine. I wonder if some of the suggestions above are meant for the outside of the tips and not the inner parts?

I'll have to try something more abrasive than soap & water with a soft-ish wire brush which didn't absolutely zero in terms of removing the black crap. I might give the brillo pad a try with some Simply Green if I still have some.

This. It'll take quite a bit of work/time, but I've made the inside of my exhaust tips spotless with this method.

+1 on this.

I recently cleaned out my exhaust tips and had substantial buildup on the right side. I picked up some 0000 steel wool and wrapped it around a dowel. Stick the dowel in a screw gun and go to town. I did this on the INSIDE and the very end of the tip. They came out VERY clean. Cleaned up with a bit of Nevr-Dull and they looked fantastic.

I bought a rough, medium, and fine 3 pack of steel wool today at Autozone. Is the fine equal or close enough to 0000? Or is that a specialty grade that will need to be purchased online?
