There is an ebay fix to change out the plastic part with a machined aluminum one.
Yes, heats makes that plastic coolant flange very brittle. Usually gets broken when people replace the leaky OFH gaskets. I learn to take that OFH bottom bolt with open wrench, I think was six point 10mm, so I don't have to remove the flange. Only one person sells this on EBay. He a good guy to deal with. Flange is cheap too. I have access to mill machine and I'm better off just ordering one on-line. 5 stars to the guy that makes them!

That's why BMW is champion of the most expensive car to maintain!
They are not most expensive to buy but give you the worst experience owning it.
Imo leasing is the best route...make them eat their own $hit

2) 2 weeks later i hear a bang and get the low coolant warning on my dash...so I get the car towed home assuming my water pump died.

3) I buy a new water pump and install it and only to find out my new thermostat exploded and that's why all my coolant drained out.

4) So I replace the thermostat (again) and notice that my lower radiator hose is missing the O ring so it wont seal to the new thermostat--leaking!

5) I remove the water pump, thermostat and fan so I can replace the lower radiator hose...

6) While putting everything back together I notice that this plastic tube everything is talking about is brittle and has broken in 2 different places...I also notice that the nipple on the upper radiator hose has broken off (this is where this plastic hose connects)

7) So I replace the upper radiator hose

8) I put everything back, bleed the system and the next day have the low coolant warning come back on...now my expansion tank is leaking!

9) So I replace the expansion tank and buy my 4th gallon of bmw coolant...bleed the system and finally my car is running perfectly again AND the check engine light has gone off!

10) WHEW! Too much plastic in these cars. Its a nightmare and its bound to happen again over time--heat and plastic are not compatible.

Anyone have a link to this custom flange? Can't seem to find it on eBay.

The bottom return line also runs right next the center jack post. Had a jack pad slip and crush this line part was $110, labor was a couple hours

Mine just went out today in my E92 at 118000 miles. Wish I seen this thread before for a permanent fix.

Mine went at one end on Tuesday when a mechanic looked at it. Facing the engine, it cracked on the right-side of the plastic straw. This morning at around 8:00am EST, I decided to try and figure out where the leak was because I've been putting around 1 gallon of Anti-Freeze a day in my car since Tuesday. I spotted the leak on right-side of the straw, and tapped the left-side of the straw, and that side snapped. It was really brittle. Gonna try and do what was suggested here with the 1/4" hose, clamps, and barbed connectors.

I can barely change a flat-tire, now I gotta start fcukin with the cooling system?

This is bullshit...

Time to learn, then. With a used BMW you have 2 options:

Learn to do your own work
OR
Pay another guy way too much to do it for you

When you're right, your right...

On the brighter-side, this thread will save me a lot of money, providing I can replace the plastic tubing myself. The posts that mentioned what parts to get were extremely helpful, and gave me the bit of confidence I needed to attempt this task all by my lonesome...

I'm forever grateful to E90Post.com!

This happened to me while I was removing the fan. Like someone else posted above I too used stainless steel brake lines (about $4) and hose clamps (about $1). Took about 10 mins to fix, which included cutting the brake line. I used 5/16 line as the outer diameter was about the same as the oem straw.

I just revisited this when I changed out my radiator. Looks like I used 16-7/8" long brake line that's 5/16" in diameter, making sure to remove any rough edges/bevel where I trimmed the brake line. I reused the tension clamps but you could use small hose clamps for sure. I actually replaced the whole line (all coolant hoses since my car is an 07' with 130k on it) and still threw out the new straw that came with this line in exchange for the 'ole reliable brake line.

Got a 2EF8 thermostat code as I was test driving the car to make sure my DMTL (Leak Diagnosis Pump) code was gone...Looking very likely that I will be doing the water pump and thermostat. I will probably end up ordering the aluminum fitting as well, but can I reuse the old hose without any problem?

Thanks for the help

I ordered 2 of those - one for my N54 and one for my daughter's N52. Changed OFHG & Oil Cooler Gasket on my daughters's and when I took off that hose to access the E bolts, that plastic flange came out in pieces. Chucked the brittle plastic and after replacing the gaskets, Just reattached the old hose to the alu flange, which BTW is very good quality & fitment. So yes, you can re-use that hose. Best part is,if that hose ever need replacing, just crush the plastic OE flange and replace it with the alu flange. Also, that O-ring that was housed in the plastic flange came out like 3 sizes bigger. The alu one had the O-ring, but I think one should order a couple to have on hand.

Well I just had this issue late last week. Turned out the crossover line split on the driver's side right where the hard plastic goes into the soft rubber, just like in the video above.

Called the dealership, price matched a new OEM hose for ~$60 in stock, and of course in the hose clamp removal process crushed the old, brittle, and very small plastic nipple on the upper radiator hose, so had to get a new one of those too, for almost the same cost. Total was just under $130 for both new parts. Love those quick connect hoses though.

next time use 8mm closed racheting wrench instead of E socket you don't have to remove the coolant flange

This just happened to me at 155k miles on my fbo e90 n54. Thankfully i was parked at a coffee bean parking lot with the car idling when a plume of sweet smelling cloud formed over the front kidney grills.

I quicky checked my engine temp which was at normal 225°F and i shut off the motor. I had AAA Plus so i towed the car home about 50 miles for free

Now i need to figure out how to disconnect the hose from the nipple and the Expansion tank.

Just heads up IF you have never replaced the upper radiator hose before.
The nipple is part of the upper radiator hose and it might be in fragile state anyhow with 155k mileage. Mine broke while trying to install the radiator in at 115k mileage. The plastic portion material inside disintegrates after a while and weakens. Mine broke off while slight push on the nipple while finagling the radiator in. It costed me around $60.

But the good news is that, for the straw hose, 1/4" Gates fuel line(1 ft long) + 2 x 1/4" barb fittings and 4 hose clamps gets the job done < $10. Autozone or O'Reallys.

Yea I am going to pick up an upper radiator hose in my next FCPEuro order and just leave it in my trunk as a spare
