Question 335 or 325 E92... help please!

Ok, so I'm in the process of looking for a "new" car to replace my 2007 IS250.
I firstly wanted something more powerful so naturally looked at the 2011 IS350's, but I really don't want the same model of car for another 4-5 years.

Then I looked at BMW's because I love the E92 shape, and firstly the 335. Then came the infamous HPFP issues, and I talked to my friend who had a IS250, then a 135i and now a 320d E92. I asked why go from 135 to 320d and he said because of the HPFP on his 135 went and he just sold it after that.
So the 335 started to come out of the equation and the 325 E92 looked more appealing (2011 M Sport for 50k). I'll be looking at dealerships after I finish exams at the end of June, but I just wanted to ask here, should I consider the 335 again? I REALLY REALLY want a 335, the power from the twin turbos!! (cant afford a 2011+ 335, so looking at 07-09) And the more I search, yes the HPFP is a issue, but doesn't seem to be that big, and only seems more big because if you don't have a problem, you wont post about it, but if you do, then you would....

does it really cost THAT much to replace the HPFP, even at a specialist and not the BMW dealership/service centre?!

Should I, for the same price, get a 2011 325 M Sport (its got the new iDrive and stuff) or a older 335 with more km's (and out of warranty)...?! OMG it's killing me! I don't know what to do. One part of me says 335, but the other says 325 for the peace of mind. Also, I will be keeping it for 4-5 years and I am a Uni student so I don't have unlimited cash to keep fixing problems. Also keep in mind, I study and work in Melbourne (I won't drive much here, tram to uni and work), but my mum, sister and girlfriend are in Sydney, so I MIGHT drive up to sydney once in a while, and I will be purchasing the car up in Sydney and driving it down to Melbourne. (getting stuck on the highway in the middle of nowhere between Syd and Melb would not be fun lol)

thank you! (its 4am and I have work tomorrow, better sleep, but been up all night just searching and reading up on E92's HAHA)

335's are fine! Just budget at least $3k for maintenance items like HPFP, injectors, coil packs, spark plugs, water pump and you'll be fine.

Good news is, once they are updated to the most revised version of these parts, you'll be good.

+1

But dont let the issue of HPFP turn you away! I mean at the end of the day what is your budget? And if you really want a 335i then get it ! or you can buy mine It's done full works on the HPFP, Waterpump, Coils, Injectors, and battery cable as mine is still under premium selection warranty and will expire 2015 July for me. It has relatively new tyres.

But I'd say if you get a 325 everytime you see a 335 you would think damn you should have gotten the 335i.

Like yourself I went from lexus ownership (loved the car and the service!) and was worried about similiar issues.

The HPFP has gone through quite a few revisions, but the latest revision so far seems solid (I believe it's now 3 years old and haven't heard of any failures)

Also an older 335i is actually the superior choice if you want power as you may know BMW changed the engine from a N54 TT, to a N55 ST which doesn't have the strengthened internals either.

I believe the 335i is a superior choice also over the 325i, as it wont use a great deal more fuel but the power and torque the N54 delivers is damn addictive!

In summary the BMW's are quite costly to maintain, whilst mine hasn't given me a great deal of trouble I have never had a car which required so much 'servicing' and have spent quite a bit to get it running sweet. Having said that I also have never owned a car which has offered as much performance as the 335i also, and like all 335i owners will say it's definately worth it!

P.S cant believe your mate sold his 135i after he replaced the HPFP?!?!

I bought my 335i 2008 e93 a few months ago and was going through exactly what you were going through. First thing I replaced was the HPFP because I would get a check engine light in high revs. Water pump was replaced by original owner.

Don't let HPFP deter you away. You can always buy the part cheaper online then take it to a mechanic to cut down on costs. Once you replace it, the newer HPFP should last you many years.

Don't get a 3 series unless it's a 335 or an M3 You will soon be addicted to the excitement of the potential once you buy a tune like a JB4..

08 335is can be had for around the mid 30k mark. Just make sure you take someone who knows the car well so that they can look out for leaks etc.. I had a pre purchase inspection done and knew everything I was getting in to.

I was in the same position as you, finished uni, half was through intern year I got me a e92 325i, I really wanted a 335 but what I read on the forum put my of, also back then it was about 45k for a good one, if I was getting it now it would defs be 335. Every time I look at a 335 I'm like shit.....shoulda gotten it, also don't think that if u get a 325 maintenance will be cheaper, I was unlucky and had to change my DME which the part its self costs 2700, programing and install an extra 200-300. However! One reason I did get the 325 was because I could floor it and hear it scream and still stay within the speed limit, on ramps of the motorway are the best lol, either way get what will make you happy and won't regret

+1 335i.

IMO the biggest pain in the arse would be the water pump. Once it fails, you literally just stop and you would have to call in a tow and its not a particular good experience especially if its on a cold, rainy winter night.

_ink had pretty much summed it up, budget at least $3k for those maintenance. Of course that estimate price is done @ a bmw specialist and not at a dealer. LOL!

I guess another thing to look for is the oil filter housing which will eventually start to leak, but it's not expensive to fix.

But there is always a good 335i that is around on carsales that had been well maintained by the owner (Hint: @kaitan). :P

I went the opposite way, and bought a very low km '09 325i. I have read nothing but excellent reviews on the N52 engine, both in terms of performance and reliability. I'm very happy with it and the lack of extra torque and power, for my purposes at least, doesn't bother me. But each to their own.

335 for sure.

Selling a 335 just because of a failed HPFP is a waste.

Thanks soo much for the replies guys!!!

You guys have convinced me! I have now decided on a 335, because #YOLO. literally... HAHA
I don't want to be envying 335's if I get a 325 like i do right now with IS350's when I drive my IS250 haha

Now on the hunt for a well maintained 335 I'm looking for something with under 70k km's. Is there anything I need to know about the different model years? (06-09)
And the options on BMW's! haha. I mostly just want navigation, sunroof and a good stereo. thanks a bunch!!

just one last thing, ive heard of the waste gate rattle problem. How can I tell if a car I look at has this problem? (apparently you need to change the turbo's if it has this problem and I def's don't want that)

#yolo good choice. what's your budget approx?

Wastegate rattle is evident if you put the hood up and give it a few revs. A few youtube videos available on this. You also want to give the car a very hard drive after it's warmed up to see the turbos actuate, HPFP is generally working if no check engine light comes on. If you haven't driven a 335i before, it might be hard to tell coming from an NA car. I remember driving the 335i first time and it felt like a rocket.

I can refer you to a guy I used for my purchase and he listed all the crap that was wrong with the car pre purchase. He was an ex BMW mechanic based in Sydney. Costs about $250 though which is slightly more than your average mechanic but he knows his BMWs very very well.

sorry to be a nuisance but what should i specifically look for when inspecting a 335?
Will the service books say if the HPFP has been changed and the water pump?
How do I check for the waste gate rattle?
And any known issues with higher mileage 335's? (100,000km +)? Mind you, I will be keeping the car for at least 4 years so the car will be around over 150,000, maybe closer to 170,000 by the time I am wanted to sell it. Thank You. (not too fussed about the resale value, just don't want major problems coming up in the time I own it, so that's why I am leaning more towards one with 70,000km's or less)

Thanks heaps

Thanks djpro1, just saw your reply, I will definitely drive it hard when I test drive (wonder if they are gonna ask why or look at me weird) well, it is a 335, and why else do I want a 335... HAHA

I drove the new F30 328i before and the power delivery seemed weird (to me). I'm used to N/A cars and it was my first time driving a "new" turbo car, I test drove the 328 and A4 2.0T back to back and the power seems so much weirder than my IS250, i mean, they are both more powerful, I can feel that from the torque and how it pushes me back, but after flooring it, there seemed to be nothing till like 2.5k RPM, then the car took off like a rocket! haha I assume it'll be much the same in the 335 but with even more kick?

http://bmw.carsales.com.au/Tig/UI/Pa...&tabID=2608900

This is well under my budget and has under 100,000km's (only just) What do you guys think? Thanks

I'm in a similar boat lemon! I have an IS250 too and want to purchase either a used E92 335i next year or a base 420i/420d next year. Just wondering what you guys recommend as the max KM's on a 335i - I notice most of the cars on carsales are sold at ~100k km mark. Do problems arise around this mark?

Don't get urself a base model brother, they suck and you will regret it, 335 for sure in that case. And problems can arise at any point, but yes in general around 100k expect something to stuff up, like someone above said, have a budget of about 3k for repairs and u will be fine

I also looked at the F series before but don't love the shape of it like I do with the E92's I would rather a top of the lim E92 than a base F series. You could also consider the Lexus RC350 when that come out later this year but for me, I want a BMW! haha
