I recently bought an AFE intake, but during installation I ran across this problem: (easier to see in pictures then describe) there are two screws that the intake housing are supposed to sit on, the only problem is ONE of the screws is being used to hold a rubber pipe in place. ( I labeled the bolts to show.) By the way the pipe has to be moved to make everything fit and to not put pressure on it by the intake sitting on it.

Maybe someone has had the same problem and can help me out. Can it be that I have an xi? If I zip tie it would that screw up the working of the hose? (What is it even for?) Probably something simple but I get worried easy.

And is this already on the MAR sensor prior to doing this, (as the intake didn't come with what it's asking me to have.) The instructions say: "Insert the MAF sensor assembly into the intake duct. Use the supplied gasket,nylon spacers, and screws between the tube and sensor."

um well when i was installing my intake, i had a problem putting the housing in. the bolts you numbered a 1 and 2 were sort of blocking the housing, but i just jammed it in and in the end all worked out.

Thanks for the input I think it might be because I have an xi.

yea, i never saw that belt when i uncliped the hose for the injen intake... i better go take a look...

I've got a 330i (no X) and don't think I had that hose there- if I recall there were just some rubber bumpers or something.
I'd imagine that hose can be re-routed, just be sure that there is no interference with anything- belts, rubbing, heat, etc.

Whoops forgot to add I fixed the problem by drilling 2 holes into the intake housing and then putting a zip tie around the hose and putting it through the two holes (after i filed them down of course so they don't rip the hose) and it works fine! So I'm guessing it's an xi think. Why do they have to be so difficult. But on a good note the think sounds like a fu*king beast thanks to the intake!

I think it might, I don't know how tight it's supposed to be but let me tell you it was a BITCH to get everything close to each other to bolt everything in, mines been in and seems good except that I'm afraid that since everything is so tight that the hose might fall off eventually!

It isn't because he has an Xi
I had this intake and the fitment of the 2 screws it lines up on the body of the car were perfectly aligned.
May just be a faulty housing and or the one screw on the body of your car me be faulty.

Why did you get rid of your AFE?

I have the exact same intake and I also did the install myself, but I didnt run into that problem.... That really strange. Maybe it is because it's a xi and there's a few more parts that needed to be fitted in there. Hope you figure it out good luck.

I felt that the intake had lost the throttle the stock intake had. I personally feel that at lower RPM's you lose performance but after about 4000rpm you get a good kick in. To me this isn't a "sound" investment on my car as I do want to get over 20mpg :P

Your right, I was feeling it too, I drive the car very little <300 miles a month so I don't mind but come spring time I'm sure to invest in a better one!

So for performance, you wouldn't recommend the AFE?

nah man.
save your money and go for the injen one it seems pretty good
but my experience from intakes is that your only going to get a better sounding car.
Not much horse power gain to the crank/wheels

ya there have have been a lot of similar complaints about this on other threads, after reading some of them they have said that there are inatal problems with the XI modles, i have a normal 2RWD modle and i did not have that hose there and had no problem with the instal. (personaly i would find out what that hose is used fore and if it was important that is stays there then get rid of the intake cause the dealership might say somthing about that. if its not a problem then maybe get a sting and tie the hose and to the screw and put the afe intake box over it to hold it in place.

Just zip tie it to a hose next to it and under the heat shield. I did that with the injen intake and everything is working great.
