Will I void the warranty by taking the carbon filter out? Should I just out it back in before I go to the dealer

I'm sure the dealership will find a reason to void your warranty if they can trace it back to the part that was tampered.

You have 07, shouldn't your warranty about to expire anyway?

My SA told me intake mod will only affect intake parts, so the most it will impact will be the MAF sensor which is the most expensive warranty item on the intake.

The BMW performance intake does not have the carbon filter, if a dealer tries to give you hard time, show them a picture of that BMW performance intake, they will have no proof to void your warranty.

But of course there is alway risk involved, just think about the risk and benefit. How likely do you even need warranty repair in the first place. Life it a risky business, so you must be willing to take some risk if you want to live, just consider the risk v. benefit before you take that risk.

The BMW Performance intake doesn't replace the half of the airbox with the carbon filter. It still has it.

You are right my bad, I was thinking about the old airbox.

Still removal of the carbon filter should have no issue with warranty because the stated purpose of the filter is to capture engine gas emission after shut off, not capturing such gas cannot possibly cause demages to the engine or any other parts. But if one is not comfortable, don't delete it.

BTW, once you cut it out, it is out, cannot be put back in.

Just installed the euro air box with a round K&N filter and took a few pictures comparing it to the US version.

I thought the fins in the top cover were interesting, seen from the mouth of the inlet side of the air box.

I have only driven it around the block and it's different. The motor does feel very free rev'ing and the throttle response was different. So I pulled over and performed the throttle rest, restarted the car .. much better response.

I'll post more after I get out and drive it around this weekend.

What did you have before the Euro box? Stock filter or high flow? Carbon delete or not?

Did you have to use the old MAF? Supposedly the MAF that comes with the Euro box cannot be used.

I was really surprised that the euro air box came complete: euro MAF sensor, a round paper filter and all (7) screws.

I did not want to try to use the euro MAF, running the risk of setting a fault, I swapped in the US version, also had read something about needing to swap it.

I had only done the carbon delete with a stock filter. That was a nice small but noticeable change in throttle response. I did that about 3-4 month ago, also did the throttle rest back then. (2006 330i, w/ sport and premium packages, 36k miles, the only other change done is I'm running RE-11 tires.)

Test Drive Update:
I just got back from another drive, highway and back roads, it's dark out but the car seems very quick (I run in DS all the time, same here) what I notice the most is the auto trans is having to shift much sooner now, rev'ing right through the rpm's, there is a noticeable sound when your foot is in it (a performance sound), when just cruising on the highway it's very smooth and stock in sound, it appears that things are happening quicker.

This feels like it has changed everything, throttle response, shift points running both in DS and M1-6, things come at you quicker and you have to brake harder or sooner .. I may have to take my words back, but man that's how it feels. The thought that's currently on my mind is it's a naughty BMW!

I'm going to rerun the route during the day tomorrow see if these impressions hold up and I'm looking forward to see how it runs during my commute.

Thanks for the photos. I wish I could have done that. I have the AFE oil drop-in, carbon delete and scoops. You might want to Ebay your new MAF to a European buyer.

What's a throttle rest? Did I miss doing something?

I think he was trying to reduce the placebo effect He was comparing the stock paper filter to the new K&N high flow round filter. The Eurobox is much easier to work with for sure.

On a side note, according to K&N, its high flow drop in filter will provide more than enough opening, the bottleneck will be the size of the air duct, not the size of the filter anymore. Which is why I am working with Craven 328 to figure out how to add a secondary inlet for my intake.

The problem I see is, if you are a very aggressive driver, resetting it will make it drive slower, correct?

Of course if you reset it after the mod, it will skew the effect of the mod too.

Drive Update:
Just back from rerunning the route from last night, still feeling the same improvements. It also appears to be arriving at given markers on the back roads faster, I'm seeing higher MPH numbers. Throttling around corners I'm seeing the traction control light up more on the dash.

Another Drive Update:

The neat thing about air boxes is you can remove them quickly.

After another morning test drive today, I thought long and hard about this and decided to put the US air box back on.

I did a throttle reset and took it for another drive on the same routes and now the car is so slow and takes so long to move through the rev's.

I put the Euro air box back on and did not do a throttle reset.

Took it for another test drive, same routes. What a difference, the motor is rev'ing very fast, having to shift quicker, top end speed sooner and higher, and the performance engine note .. it's music to the ears, it reminds me of the sound in the video that BMW created to sell BMW Performance parts.

When I first removed the carbon filter from the US air box and then reinstalled using the stock filter a few months back it reminded me of the change I felt when I have installed a K&N in to both an E36 318 and an E46 M3. This Euro air box change is so different, it's a completely different animal in the order of improvement. It kind of reminds me of the end result change I felt after putting on headers, bypass pipe, exhaust and software onto an E46 M3, kind of. I just can't put my finger on it, I just don't get!

Just to confirm, your stock US airbox has carbon delete but still has the stock paper filter?

Any aftermarket tune?

If the change is really so big, I am inclined to order the Euro box and K&N round filter. I think the round filter is more rigid in construction and the box is easier to open, so there are other benefits.

Yes, confirming US air box, stock paper filter, carbon delete, no tuning or any other modes.

Thanks! Did you order it from ECU Tuning? If so do they still sell that Euro intake "kit" which included the K&N round oiled filter I think, if so how much? I don't see it on their website, maybe I was looking at the wrong place.

I did order the air box from ECS and did not see the K&N filter on their site, so I ordered it from K&N's online store which included free ground shipping.

I just called ECS Tuning, they have both the Euro airbox and the K&N round oiled filter, the filter is only $38.95, placed both orders together will see them in a few days.

Part of the reason I ordered this is also because I am trying to free up my own US airbox for some more DIY mod experiments.
