Finally got a 335i
After looking for about a year for the right one, I finally got an e90 335i this weekend.
It's an 08 with 60k, Sparkling Graphite on Terra, sport, premium and cold weather packages as well as a few other options like comfort access. The cold weather was hard to find in the south, but I really wanted the fold down seats. I've had an 01 325xi for the past 6 years and have been looking for something else for about a year. A 335i was the main thing I was looking for, although I had considered e46 M3s also. The graphite on terra was the ideal color I was looking for, this is actually the only one I have seen and I didn't know if the combo actually existed before I found this. The power on this is amazing compared to my 325 and a lot of fun. I'm trying to hold off modding for awhile although a JB4 is very tempting... Unfortunately when I got it home I realized that the waste gate rattles. It isn't very audible when the car is warmed up, so I didn't notice it until the first cold start. I'm trying to decide what to do about this. The dealer says they won't do anything under warranty unless the turbos have failed. I am thinking I may just try to adjust the rear waste gate and see if that fixes the issue. The 335 will be my daily driver with some autocross about once a month and maybe a couple HPDEs in the future. I still have my e46, I was planning on selling it, but kind of want to keep it.... Here are some pics: I drove from NC to GA to get the car, so I stopped by the SC factory on the way home View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com (that Mazda dealer mat is gone, as well as the Mazda sticker and license plate frame they put on the back of the car) The new and the old: View post on imgur.com |

Nice, those pics at the factory are awesome. Grats, you're not gonna be able to hold off on the power mods. Its addicting and the n54 just loves it.
Btw, check this thread out about the rattles, 8yr 82k miles you might be able to get something done about it: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=729833

She looks great! As far as getting the turbos replaced, read the pdf on this page http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=729833
If your car exhibits the exact behavior the SIB requires for coverage, "a clanking noise occurring up to six or seven times in a row during a deceleration from approximately 3,500 RPM, or during a heavy application of the accelerator without a drive gear being engaged," then the dealer *should* go ahead with it, show them the document.. if that doesn't work then call BMW NA |

Great looking car. You will be addicted to flooring it...
Now. The only thing you need to do, is change your user profile. Still says 01 325xi.

The rattle of the latter situation IS indicative of a wastegate defect and is what BMW will cover the repair for. Is that what you have? The turbochargers don't need to have failed for coverage under the warranty.. like I said, print it out and shove it in their face, hopefully they will give in. |

I wonder if calling BMW NA for clarification would help at all. The dealer I spoke to is one of two in the area and has a reputation for being more helpful than the other. Maybe I should call the other dealer though and see what they say. It seems like regardless I am going to be on the hook for the diagnostic if they don't determine it falls under the warranty. The dealer I spoke with basically said yea we can look at it and adjust the waste gate, but the warranty doesn't apply unless there is turbo failure. "BMW NA has agreed to extend, to a total of 8 years or 82,000 miles, whichever comes first, the emissions warranties covering the Settlement Class Members’ vehicles for any failure of a turbocharger caused by a defect in a turbocharger wastegate. " The last part there is what they are reading as do not replace unless turbo is failed. Which is what it sounds like it's saying. If anyone has any tips on how to get the dealer to replace just because of the rattle, let me know. |

Haha yes I did and honestly the dealer was not great. It took me two days of arguing with them to get them to take it for a pre-purchase inspection. I almost walked away, but it is exactly what I had been looking for.

Nice ride! Looks clean
You should get the JB4, it really wakes this engine up, and if you don't need a ton of power, just run map 1 which is for stock, but still packs a hell of a punch over no tune. Also, these engines have a reputation for getting heavy carbon deposits on the intake valves, so depending on how your idle is, and mileage, you may want to consider having an indy perform a walnut blasting service for you. You've been around since January it seems so i'm assuming you've already done some research

hmm the way I see it turbocharger defects is turbocharger failure. Wastegate doesn't open correctly, and possibly doesn't close correctly resulting boost loss/leak.
I wish I could help you out more but fortunately my dealer went ahead and honored the warranty as soon as I mentioned it. Your car is eligible according to the procedure.. Edit: I remember mentioning a loss of performance to my SA.. maybe that will help. Good luck. |

Had you had any work done at the dealer before? Right now I feel like the dealer just sees me as some random person trying to get new turbos on a used car I just bought, probably doesn't help that I didn't buy the car from them.

No, I was completely new to the dealership. I bought my car outside of the BMW dealer network too.

I would just try adjusting the waste gate, because I can reach down and feel the rear arm is pretty loose, but I don't want to mess with it and risk BMW saying I caused an issue. |
