I've thought about attempting this before, rather than routing the piping back to the stock location I thought it would be more beneficial to create a ram air intake on the passenger front brake duct area. Those brake ducts are worthless anyways...

I REALLY hope you did it right and have a recent before and will provide an after dyno?

Well if they're supposed to be bolt on and not require the engine out then I'm sure they could do one afterwards pretty easily.

I considered making a set of these until I realized what it'd cost in labor to install them vs the possible gains.

What do you think the possible gains would be?

Noob question, why not just move the air filters to the other side close to the turbos, ditch the stock diverters and use a BOV dumped to atmosphere? Might as well take advantage of no MAF meter.

How do you figure that? the pipes shouldn't be that expensive once a company fabs them and has a jig to remanufacture them.

I would be more worried about install cost. The rear pipe is a b!tch

I guess lack of space there

Terry mentioned he thought about this but got to the conclusion that it's infeasible

No offense dude, but this statement is inane. How can you say that without knowing what the costs will be, how it is done and what the results with tuned engines are going to be?

Alpina has done such an upgrade with their B3S Biturbo, and replicas of this piping are being used in Germany, to very good effect from what I've heard. When you take a look at the stock pipes, it is obvious that they're a bottleneck. In particular for the boost some here are running, even more so with upgraded turbos.

I agree the installation of the rear pipe is probably the biggest issue. But it seems that there are ways around this, and I applaud anyone trying to do this.

Interesting. I will be upgrading turbos in the next month or so, depending a bit on Rob's delivery time, and I would love to get this done at the same time. Do you have any knowledge of where I could find some of those Alpina replica pipes in Europe?

IMO it's such an obvious place to look for improvements, no wonder Alpina did it

from what Alpina lux stated in another thread the cost is prohibitive.

Ok, coming from you (with all your upgrades), that must mean substancial costs...

Wonder if my local guy can do something about it. He's built a lot of fast custom turbo cars.

quoting Alpina lux:Replicas of the ALPINA pipes can be acquired in Germany for more than 2000 EUR (!), so any solution that is far less expensive is more than welcome.

I found this german tuning company that sells complete kits. In the most powerful one you can see they modified the intake / inlet of the oem ones to make them bigger:

Cool, thanks. Looking good and clean, but extremely pricey indeed....

If this engine was layed out in a manner allowing easy access to the turbochargers then the inlet pipe would have been one of the first places we'd modify and probably one of the most readily available parts. It's been proven on many turbocharged cars that a larger intake pipe increases performance, VAG tuners are all over this and hitting big numbers. Effectively you have to make less boost to gain the same performance, your turbo's just don't have to work that hard to draw in the air that the engine wants. Stock intake pipes are adequate for stock performance, most manufactuers don't look past that for whatever reason, space, cost, whatever. What is remarkable though is that this engine can still produce 440bhp FBO with 'restrictive' pipes, so in theory they aren't all that restrictive at all but I wonder what could be had with some larger versions.

If Alpina copies could be had for affordable money then this is where I'd want to go however, if not then I'd pick the over-engine option offered here for maintenance/boost leak testing purposes. Either way you're going to get stung for labour on the original pipes.
