Which brand do you prefer?

I've used both and I feel that our n54 engines burns less of the Castrol oil.

Thoughts?

Well I believe the BMW OEM oil is just a rebranded version of the mobile oil, no?
As long as it's synthetic I suppose they're all about the same.
I'm sure this will incite a major oil debate, and I'm sure one of the contenders will be that royal purple crap

I believe that the stock motor oil is a rebranded Castrol Syntec 0W-30 Euro Blend which is normally $8.99 in local auto stores.

My oil cap says "BMW Castrol", which is a 2012 335i (N55).

I wound up just going to the dealership and getting the BMW brand oil which is 5W-30 and their oil filter. That came to $71.11

I changed my oil this past Saturday and the dealership was actually cheaper (BMW oil) than Auto Zone (Castrol oil).

M1 0W-40 because it is LL-01 and it is the cheapest LL-01 available. $22 at Wally or $32 at Advanced with a HU816 oil filter. Every 5-7k would be best in a N54. Others may last longer but they all get dirty . ADD BMS OCC and start looking into walnut blasting -- your future .

Here in the uk the dealers use both...so i just use castrol when doing my oil change as its usually cheaper

Either. Dealer oil is either an Ashland product or Castrol TXT. Nobody knows for sure other than it being a 5w30.

I would go with castrol edge 0w30 aka german castrol. Just look for who has it on sale at the auto parts stores. Most of the time its 5 quarts and a filter for 30

Although it carries a number of impressive OEM approvals M1 0w40 doesn't meet the German definition of synthetic either. I guess it's a "Lie" as well.

It isn't. It's another (less sophisticated) Castrol European product and is 5W30 (just like it says on the BMW bottle).

M1 0W40 protects well, but shears. It's a 30 weight (lighter than the Castrol 0W30) within a few thousand miles. Castrol 0W30 euro is shear stable and "stays put" in terms of viscosity as the miles go on. I have my very own lab results to back this up, along with many others from the 'net.

I found my BMW M52 was way noisier on M1, not so on Castrol 0W30.

Neither is my favourite oil, but if I need official LL-01 I reach for Castrol 0W30 every time.

Just get your oil from local dealer, they will have the proper stuff.

First time I hear that, is it from cracked base 3 too ? I thought that all M1 where from base 4.

No, it's group III as far as I know, but it also doesn't matter what group # the base oil is. All that matters is the performance characteristics of the final blended product. These products have been constantly improving over the last 10-15 years.
