Most of the younger people on the forum, who claim to have great jobs are still spending much more than they realistically can afford on a car. As some have said, they still live at home, and it might be their only real expense, hence they can "afford" it. If they had to pay rent or a mortgage, plus various insurances, plus groceries, etc, etc the story might be different. Real life expenses add up fast, and I'm not even counting marriages or children

I'm not lumping everyone in the 16 through 20-22 age group in this bracket, as I'm sure some probably do make well over enough to afford their cars, but the reality is that unless you come out of school and have your own well established business, or land a highly prized high paying job, buying a 50K car making 50K and saying "oh yeah, I can easily afford it" is foolish.

I don't know about you guys but I dated a rich girl in high school and married her after I graduated college. Why work hard when you don't have to work at all.

In all seriousness, my general rule is income / 2.5 = max car I can afford with a "reasonable" cost of housing, food, etc.

The avg. gross income on a new E46 buyer was 140k. I saw the BMW marketing materials.

E46's cost way less than E9x's. Especially 2013's, wow. So it would stand to reason the avg. gross income is way higher than 140k. It is what it is. I know that's not the avg. gross income on this forum.

One morning saw it sitting in someones driveway warming up in the winter. Looked inside, saw the keys and figured hey why not they must not want it if the door is unlocked. Jumped in and never looked back.

Jealousy is an ugly color

Summed up quickly, you wouldn't reject your parents' offer to buy you a car, and two, a used Euro is cheaper than a new rice rocket

No need for the hate guys

Edit: I couldn't even IMAGINE that conversation

"Would you want a new Civic or a used BMW?"
"No thanks, Ma, I want to work full time and juggle classes and hopefully buy a beater"

I'm 17 and have a BMW but that's because I was smart and started saving since I was 10 and once I turned 17 I had a pretty huge sneaker collection and I sold most of it to gather up some more money. I ended up saving about $12,000 and my mom helped me out with about $7-8000. I'm not some punk kid either. I'm extremely blessed to have such a beautiful car.
