335xi or 335i with snow tires for Denver?

Hi all, I just moved to Boulder, CO (near Denver) and I'm trying to figure out if I really have to get a 335xi with snow tires for my planned weekly trips up to the ski resorts, or if I can manage with a 335i and snow tires.

I would just get an xi and not even think about it, but it's HARD to find an xi coupe, let alone one with any type of options/color combo I'd want. So the main reason I'm considering the 335i is just to get some variety and choices. But since I'm going to be skiing a ton I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and be stuck in the slow lane while all the AWD people are zooming by me.

Thanks for any advice.

Of your going to do a lot of ski trips, definitely get a Xi. Snow up the high country can be pretty unpredictable.

i is fine with snow tires in around the front range, I havent had issue unless its really deep, but I wouldnt be taking my car up to the mtns in a snow storm. Going up to the MTN's, get an XI. XI + snows = TANK as long as you have the ground clearance.

If you are buying in Colorado, it seems tougher to find a non X-drive IMO. I had to go out of state to get my RWD (and I do run snow tires during the winter, but we take my wife's car up to mountains during the winter - you really want something with some ground clearance up there IMHO).

Naw, RWD is fine in the snow around here with proper snow tires. I drive my RWD E34 530i everywhere and that thing is a tank...granted the 3-series is lower which could be a bigger deal in really deep snow.

As long as you don't live on a country road or anything, you don't need XI.

These other guys saying you need it just need to learn how to drive a RWD car in the snow is all...but like said above, good luck finding one locally.

noway to RWD on I-70 in the mountains. It gets pretty hairy sometimes if theres a blizzard, I'd recommend packing cables in the trunk too just in case....I've been stranded since I didn't have them and the roads were only open if you had chains/cables.

Whatever, we've been doing RWD with snow tires since I was a little kid when the snow was really bad.

I've been driving rear wheel drive BMWs with snows for years and there have only been a handful of times that I haven't been able to go where I want and I have never gotten stuck (but almost have).

I also tend to have a 4WD vehicle as a second or third car available and there are times I have been out in that (skiing, mountains and deep snow) and if I had been in my BMW it would not have worked until roads or parking lots were plowed.

If your BMW is your only car and RWD, I would recommend a more aggressive snow tire tread rather than a performance snow tire and you will have better results. You'll be limited then only by clearance, driving skills, ice and really, really steep hills or combinations of those things.
