I'm sure the Conti tires are a step down from the summer tires. I thought maybe you had experience with the Michelin all seasons that I'm running. I'm impressed with your 60' times on them, though. I've never run better than a very high 1.6 on a mid 12s @ 110mph car.

I ended up keeping my 335xi because the wife likes it so much. I doubt I'll race it again, but I will likely get the Cobb installed on it and a pro-tune for E85. If things don't progress much then I may get back into this myself when I get my second car (E39 M5), and run progressively more power and traction until something breaks.

A couple of notes for those non familiar with my car:
- Ran 490whp / 550wtq on nitrous + meth + race gas (no nitrous in 1st gear though, no point really without more traction)
- 350+ brake boost launches from 1st gear
- 100+ brake boost launches from 2nd gear, then the clutch packs for that gear were done, 2nd gear launches in the 335xi are NOT recommended by me for this reason
- Power transfer to the front wheels is a bit jerky when engaging at full power (rear wheels spin briefly before all 4 start spinning)
- Ran Pilot Sports initially, but just on tune only, all high power runs were done on Conti DWS, with this setup I hit a 1.57 60' time with copious amounts of wheelspin
- Wheelspin in my setup may be what saved my drivetrain from breaking, according to all the drivetrain experts I talked to traction is the #1 killer of drivetrain components
- No transfer case issues, or front diff issues thus far (knocks on wood)
Welcome back after a short hiatus. I'll be interested to see how long you can stay with just the cobb. Meth addicts hardly recover

I believe the group buy did fall short and the money is being refunded, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for Jack to get started. If we end up needing to pay for something we'll need to try again.
Based on what Jack had said, I thought the group buy had ended because we didnt need to contribute?

joining this thread late as well, but I'm very interested. Want to guarantee my car's running safely with my setup, or that I'm not killing the transfer case. I don't launch from a dig that often, but being practically FBO & Meth I know that the HP figures are up there

1 of the t-cases just showed up. Still waiting for the other.

I may not be able to tear into it until next week as I am leaving for a short vacation. As soon as I get back I'll do my best to tear it down, clean it up and post a bunch of pictures. I hope to have time to do that next week when I get back, but I got a lot of twin clutch AWD units that showed up, so I'm going to be pretty busy when I get back.

Thanks again!

I've been curious, too, so I just left Jack a message on his phone. Hopefully he'll get back on here soon with an update...

Hey guys - it's been a few weeks now with no response. If you'd like, we can help organize one with someone else?

Here are a few pictures below. I don't see anything that I would consider weak with this t-case. I have asked before, but never got a response, what is the failure with these? Does anyone have a unit which is broken? Other than the case, all looks to be very strong and well built to me. It looks like we are going to wait until someone breaks a unit before we know what to make. I would love to modify or build something for this, but I can't catch anything as an obvious problem.

Sorry for the slow response with this. I had a piece of metal go through my hand the other week and it was a nightmare. Let me know what you guys want to do with the t-cases and I'll look into it.

Thanks again!

Jack

Jack, awesome pics but stop being such a pansy, it's only a piece of metal going through your hand.

Just kidding! Hope you're doing better.

As for the t-case, I thought the people with failures said it was something to do with a worm mechanism. Overall, I agree that all those pieces seem to look pretty heavy duty.

Your work on this is fantastic. Maybe you can relate some t-case failures that you've seen with other platforms and see how those weak points relate to the specific xi parts.

I had a failure in the actuator motor, not the TC itself. The motor has a plastic cob wheel that is only used on one side and it wears out over time.

When I get time, hopefully by the weekend at least, I'll search through the various past threads to research what people have reported and speculated. Like pits2000 said, perhaps it would be pertinent to compare other models' TC failures, or even other models' TC upgrades to accomodate built motors, significant increases in boost; what pieces were fortified, how they were fortified, why, etc.

If I recall correctly, a worm/cog interface was said before to be made of a type of plastic and could benefit from being made of a stronger material? I'll look into this more for better detail unless someone else wants to beat me to it with a post explaining this in further detail.

In the end, if your opinion based on expertise, experience and a first hand, up and close look is such that you dont see an upgrade as necessary, I'd believe you and I'll continue to push for the weakest link. At least until I get this damn car consistently into the 11s...
