Thanks in advance

Anyone out there who has bought one and used it?

I just want to reset the dpf fault before I take it on the motorway?

There's a company called Autel that make half decent ones, but doubt they do things like DPF resetting, it's more generic OBD2 code reading.

However, I've got to be honest, the most useful thing (aside from proper Rheingold software on a laptop) is the Carly for BMW app - with their bleutooth adaptor.

That would be the most convenient and the feature list of the app is very impressive and constantly updated. I know there is a specific DPF reset/regen fuction on that too.

App is about £40 from memory, and the the adaptor about £20.

Don't be tempted by cheaper bluetooth adaptors on eBay, as the detection/connection with ALL ECU modules is a bit hit and miss - no idea why, but I had a cheap one first then bought the proper Carly one.

I'd recommend a proper cable and diagnostic software. http://www.cable-shack.co.uk/

Really easy to set up and the softwares included are simple to use. I have used Inpa, DIS and NCS.

If you're going to go the full hog and get laptop software, personally I'd get the Rhiengold software.

INPA/DIS are very old and clunky, and not especially user friendly.

Rheingold is more expensive at the moment, but way better in my opinion - having owned and used everything mentioned in this thread so far.

Rheingold is free for download..

Just search and you will get loads of links..

Get a reliable cable, and you are done..

Would need to check compatability as Carly doesn't support my 2008 320d when it comes to the DPF features yet.

It might not support the DPF specific features, but you can still reset the fault codes, which is what he wanted!

Thanks for the responses.

I read somewhere that it was necessary to erase the dpf fault codes before setting out on a drive and maybe erasing them as they appear on the journey (by a passenger) whilst driving constantly about 60mph and about 2500rpm basically in 4th gear.

If that fails a forced regen.

But on the other hand I thought why waste a couple of hours driving why not just do a forced stationary regen? (bad idea?)

The fault clearing method worth well for blocked DPF. INPA (BMW Standard Tools) with a DCAN cable and laptop is your best option for this. Also, some good DPF cleaner will aid this process.

For regeneration to occur there has to be specific criteria met. This has been discussed on the forum many times. I don't recall off the top of my head specifics but it's something like...

coolant is above 75C, over 10litres of fuel in the tank and the exhaust temp is circa 250C.

Also if you have any glow plug faults, this will stop a regen process.

Forced regen cannot be done 'stationary' as far as I know. How could the high temperatures be achieved?

sorry about digressing back to dpf clearing. (Stationary regen by increasing revs say 4000?)

Theres no faults on the idrive apart from DPF fault but to be truthful the car preforms the same as before the fault appearing sometimes reaching 37mpg.

But I suppose I better do a diagnostic to make sure that the glow plugs are ok.
In regards to the other points my car is getting above 75 (gets to 88 within 10minutes of driving) .

If I had a glow plug fault wouldnt it appear on my dash?

To be honest with you I just want to give my car the best chance of doing a regen because driving around at 60mph for a couple of hours is boring!!

Very few faults actually show on the dash, glow plugs are not one of them.

If you want a simple option, buy the cable from bcables.com.

It comes with all the software you need on a DVD with a really simple installer.

The software is all downloadable for free, but its less hassle just jamming a disk in and letting it install.
