335i End of Lease Coming Up - What to Do?
Hi All-
I can't believe it's been almost 3 years already with my 335i. Here's my original picture set from 2007: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33350 I've had such good times with the car, and it's been amazing figuring out its limits and having RWD fun. But now it's time to figure out what to do next, and man am I having trouble. I figured I'd post to see what people here have to say. First, a little about why I lease. 1. I work from home so I do no daily commuting. This one has 9500 miles on it. No I'm not joking. This car is for 70% fun and 30% practicality. 2. I want to try a new car every few years. Honestly, I may end up going right back into a 335i again and stick a PROCede in it to spice things up. But part of me wants a new (or pre-owned) car to learn to master. Opening the field up to any make/model, but here are the restrictions: 1. I'm currently paying $576/mo for the 335i. I'm looking to keep it in the same ballpark. $5k down max, around $600/mo 2. I need 4 seats (yeah, bummer), but I prefer the look of a coupe. 3. Manual gearbox (would settle for SMG if no manual available) 4. I'm here for the driving. Power/handling is my top concern. Options and premium packages don't excite me. 5. I'm ok with tune ups but I don't want to pour cash into the car if I get a pre-owned. I also need some reliability. If restriction #1 wasn't there, I'd just get an M3 But as it stands I have to be a bit more creative. Here's what I've been considering: - 135i (even though I'm not fond of its looks) - Audi TTS Coupe - I'm test-driving one on Wednesday - any thoughts on it? - G37 coupe (haven't driven one, but I'm doubtful it will compare to the 335) - Another 335i coupe with PROCede - Used 911 (2002 puts me in my price range - a little old) Any suggestions for other options? Any comments on these choices? I've been debating this in my head for a while now, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say.

I test drove the G37 on Friday and was completely turned off. The car won't accelerate under 4k RPM. Anooying. I say 335i or used 911. The Audi TT-S is going to be really small.

TT-S coupe actually has a rear seat. I don't actually need to use it much - just need to tell my wife we can put a car seat back there The 911 is tempting but it scares me. After coming from full BMW coverage under lease, I'm thinking going to a 30k+ miles 2002 911 is going to raise my TCO a lot.

My lease is up soon, and I'm in the same boat. Another 3-series (this would be my 4th) or spice it up.
I drove a Black Sapphire/Coral Red 135i with M Sport Package over the weekend and all I can say is WOW WOW WOW. It instantly became my next car, I could care less that the E92 looks better, the 135i is a whole lot more fun to drive. And the design has grown on me. Not to mention, they're unique. Plus, the 3's are getting ridiculously expensive.

- 135i - Same as your 335i, only smaller and uglier
- Audi TTS Coupe - I haven't driven the new one, but I drove the older generation TT plenty and it's a load of fun. It's not RWD, though, if that matters. - G37 coupe - I test drove this prior to buying my 335i. I didn't think it was put together as well as the 335i. I loved the engine exhaust note, especially on hard acceleration. That thing sings. - Another 335i coupe with PROCede - might as well. - Used 911 - Used Porsche? From 2002? Is you's craxy? If you're open to Audi, a little birdie told me that the next gen S4/5 will be supercharged, lighter, more fuel efficient, and faster than the current one. You might want to wait a little bit and check one out. As a bonus, rowboat config comes standard. Good luck, keep us posted! |

I would suggest you stay with the 335i. Seems like the best compromise between performance/practicality. Only thing you should think about is whether to buy the current one out or look for a used example.
The low miles on your car actually work against you in this case, they have less incentive to negotiate the residual.

imho the end of a lease is a great opportunity to do something different. If you simply get another 335i, wouldn't it had made more sense to purchase, especially since you've only put 9500 mi on the vehicle? The low mileage directly benefits the lessor's wholesale value. To me, it's a golden opportunity to move up, or move down (save $$$ in this economy), but not to do the same. To lease a 335 in the 500's, when the dealership sent me an email Fri. night stating 8k off a new E90 335 2k8 i.e. 39k with sport/prem/step/cold seems to imply a disconnect....the fire sale prices on the vehicles (like 11k off a 2k8 new M3) don't seem to be reflected in the leasing prices. What is particularly hilarious is that one is putting 5k down to get these lease prices in the 500 range. They hold the monthly pyt down while increasing the downpyt--that's contrary to a 39k new E90 335, whose discount got slammed by at least 5500 since last year.

If you want to stay with the 335 wouldn't you be better off just buying your current one (assuming it has no problems) since it has such low milage? If you are hankering after a Porsche, wouldn't a lease on a boxster/cayman fit your budget?

If you re-lease, you will not have to put down a security deposit and you will not have to pay the $350 disposition fee. Right now the residuals aren't the best, at least compared to December when mine were locked in.
You should calculate the payment on a new lease. If it's favorable, you should be able to get in for very little money up front - first payment, tags and the acquisition fee if you don't roll that in. What shape are the tires? They may get you on those if they are low tread. My dealer ignored three marginal ones. That would have been $800!!

Well I checked out the TT-S today. Test drive is on Wed but I wanted to run some numbers.
Base TT-S lease was quoted at $780. They have GOT to be kidding me. Still going to go for the test drive. Hell if they said $650, I'd consider it. But close to $800/mo for a <$50k car lease? I attached some pics of their showroom model and an R8 just for kicks

Yep. They're fine. They come off with just some warm water and peeling anyway.

Unfortunately I'm looking for a 4-seater, even if those extra seats are really uncomfortable.

i would think maintenance on a 7 yr old 911 (2002 model) would not make it worth it...
how about an A5? |

Audis have horrible residuals, thus horrible lease rates.
Just to throw a wild card into the mix, just for fun, go test out a Camaro SS. Yes yes I know, but it's a fast mofo, and can dance in the twisties like few others. You owe it to yourself to just try one out.

i say buy out your lease if you can get a great deal, CPO it and keep it until it runs out while saving for a bigger and better car. You don't have nav on your current 335 so iim guessing you're not dying for the new idrive, so I dont really see the benefit of getting another 335.
The 1 is nice, but the interior isn't quite up to par with the 3. The TT-S is awesome, but its not unique enough to justify the price tag, especially when tons of face lifted long island grandmas are driving around in 2.0T TT's like they own the road. The G37 is just a no. Just no. If you want a 335, but just with more power spend the money on a Dinan upgrade. 911s are great, but like I said above why not wait for a bigger and better car. If a newer 911 falls in to that category then do that.

A5's are problematic. I mean engine failing problematic.
