We live in Britain not Siberia so unless you live in deepest darkest rural Scotland or somewhere similar, winter tires are a waste of time and money. Just drive a little slower\more carefully and if it's so bad (very doubtful, last time we had any really show stopping snow was about 15 years ago) then just don't go out that day.

Driving for 20 years in the UK and never needed winter tires.
Blasphemy!

The religion that is 'Winter Tyres' will smite you,and no doubt a fatwa will quickly follow.

The train to hell for you Mr Guvernator, platform 666,leaves at 16.06 and 6 seconds

Must be nice to have a job where you can just decide not to go out on a bad day .........

My winters go on as soon as I feel the need to wear a jumper. The two go hand in hand as far as I'm concerned.

On the flip side, your job and\or boss must s*ck if for 1 or 2 days a year were the weather might actually impede your journey to work, they aren't more understanding.

Well unfortunately with a relatively large workforce and a production facility that would sit idle for a day costing multiple thousands I can't see it working if everyone took that approach. Sadly in the real world people need to make all efforts to get to work especially in such tough economic times....... and I am one of the bosses so its my decision that I need to make it to work everyday.

Where do you live, Australia? Or do you drive round with you eyes closed?! I live in the East Midlands and can think of countless ocasions when winters on my car would have been invaluable. Driving slowly doesnt help if i cant even pull away! The tyres you use are summer tyres and do not work properly below 7 deg

This has got me thinking....

On my previous VW Golf Mk4 which I had for 6 years, I went through every winter with summer tyres fitted and had zero problems. Honestly, fitting winter tyres to my BMW has never crossed my mind until this thread.

Is it really that bad in the winter with our RWDs?

It depends a lot on your model of BMW, whether its manual or auto and wheel/tyre size but generally if the weather is bad your BMW ain't great. Certainly no comparison with a FWD Golf!

Winter tyres arent just about snow. They are made from a different compound of rubber and are designed to work when it is below 7 deg. They help you stay on the road when its icy and greatly reduce stopping distances. Running winters isnt a waste of money as your still only using one set of tyres at any time

You haven't watched Mega's earlier post I guess then ?
Even down in London you have had various periods of snow - some of us have a lot of snow and ice each year which can make using a high powered RWD car very awkward

I wasn't going to bite but I could have sworn it was the winter before last. Unless of course by 'we' you mean 'me, my immediate family and the other people on my road'. But feel free to continue making sweeping generalisations about the weather in all parts of the country and what effect poor road conditions have on other members jobs.

Are you snowed in? Should have got some winter tyres.

To be honest that will be the end of my involvement in this. It's all a bit silly.

I can't be bothered arguing with the mentally dubious (Best way I can think to put it). But I make my choice and they make theirs.

The post from CarAbuser just above in particular of course is extremely mentally dubious indeed. To the point that I really hope it's just a troll - because no-one could really be that 'dubious' ... could they ?

Pay your money, take your choice.

Not going to argue since nobody really wins an argument (aside from George Galloway).

Everyone's location is differently affected by bad weather, everyone's need to get to work may be different, everyone's ability to afford and justify the expenses may be different etc etc.

Everyone makes up their own minds and does their thing, some will buy some won't. Some buy another car for the winter, some won't. Fact is that in extreme weather a RWD BMW on summers is a lot more difficult than a FWD car, if thats an issue then people make their decisions, if it isn't and you can stay home when it snows thats the best option.

Should be like Germany where they are compulsary. Im fed up of sitting behind front wheel drive cars struggling up icy/snowy lanes cos they dont see the point in winters.
During the winter you will see two types of incident on the TV regularly
1. Drivers unable to get traction (usually front wheel drive without winters on)
2. Overturned cars in ditches (Usually 4x4 drivers who dont know the difference between traction and braking)..... and frequently female!

Got a staggered set of new 18" Dunlop Wintersport 3D's arriving tomorrow for the 330d. Got a set of these for the Merc and they were genuinely amazing. Not putting them on just yet, keeping my eyes out for a spare set of rims. Otherwise I'll stick em on mid-November.
