How often should I change my oil?

I have a 2011 328i and i feel that the oil change schedules BMW has laid out are too far apart. Does anyone change their oil in between BMW's scheduled maintenance? If so how long till I do an intermediate oil change? 6K miles? 8K miles? Also, if I plan on doing intermediate oil changes, would I have to tell the car mechanic not reset my oil change schedule? Would BMW void my maintenance warranty if they found out?

Thanks~!

A lot of people plan on changing in between the 15k alloted segments of the free maintenance period. Meaning around 7-8K.

I have a new 2011 E93 and had the same question. I plan on changing it myself at 7500 and every 7500 miles between the BMW 15K mile changes.

My big question is do I wait till 7500 miles for the 1st change or do one earlier?

My dealer generally charges about $105 with an occasional coupon for an $80 change (make sure you ask for an "Interim Oil change", not a complete Oil Service). Since DIY is $65 for the parts, I gladly pay $15 or even $40 to avoid the hassle and get a good car wash in the bargain.

And the dealer will normally not reset the countdown so the next free change is not delayed.

I've been doing mine every 8K miles.

Since I'm in Europe, the dealer uses a BMW-LL04 oil (Castrol SLX 0W40). The oil changes cost about 230 Euros per (ouch!).

I have my second oil change 31 May. I've already requested a sample so that I can send it to blackstone--I'm really curious to see the results.

I predict they will tell you 10,000 miles.
