BMW cars burn oil - what?

I have a 2011 e90 and I realized that the oil indicator on the dash shows that a oil pan is about 1/4 lower than the Max mark.

I called my SA at BMW and she explained that my car will burn oil and its quite normal because the engine runs hotter than normal cars.

She also said that I will need to top up the oil and coolant once I get the message on my dash.

Does this make sense?

it's normal to burn some oil in the inintial break-in, but after that, not a significant amount. If you follow normal oil changes that most people do (5000-7500) you should not have burned any oil, but if you follow BMW oil changes (15000+), you will most likely need to add some oil during the interval.

Its normal, I've had to add 1 qt. of oil between oil changes twice so far (both times at about 10,000km since the last oil change).

Normal engine oil consumption is 1 qt. in 2,000-5,000 miles. You will definitely need to add oil between BMW specified OCIs and this is normal. If you change the oil at 5K-7.5K you may or may not need to add oil but the engine will still consume some oil.
This sounds pretty definitive from a knowlegeable guy. Lets see how many more answers we can get that are virtually the same..........

Every 12,000 km at least. 24,000 km is BS.
