Bmw 320d ED ,make gear shift faster
Hi everyone
I am not sure whether it's just me or it's standard on this model but I feel like the gear shift requires more power than other cars (i had a vauxhall corsa and the gear was very light) it feels a bit stiff but the dealer told me that there's nothing wrong with it and this is the gear is on these models. Having said that, I read somewhere about a mod that doesn't require any tool and allows to have a faster gear shift, which basically is about removing a nut(something similar) and the gear engages a lot quicker. I am sorry for not having the name of this mod but hope you can understand what I'm talking about. Having said that. If you know what the mod is about, can you explain me whether it's a mod worth doing ? and are there inexpensive mod that I can use to gain faster gear shifts? Thank you |

I presume you are talking about manual transmission? Removing a nut sounds a recipe for disaster! I have improved the quality and speed of shift on my car by four things:
1. Gearbox oil change 2. Fit clutch stop: http://www.burgertuning.com/clutch_stop_BMW.html 3. CDV delete: http://www.burgertuning.com/bmscdv.html 4. Rogue Engineering gearbox mounts: http://www.rogueengineering.com/rogue/D/TM.html Also, if you have an SE model, you could try fitting an MSport gear linkage which has a shorter stick and shorter throw I believe. Go consider...

Thanks a lot for the clear and detailed set of information.
I will research on these and see whether I can apply them. That's correct, mine is a manual. |

On my last 320d the shift from 1st to 2nd was horrible and very hard, just had to live with it. I had a mate with the same car and he confirmed that is wasn't pleasant either.. This time round i have an auto with paddles.

I use this:
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-981-fuch...ion-fluid.aspx Pretty sure you'll need two litres - though you won't use it all.

I have read a bit about the BMS Short Throw Clutch Stop. The links you've provided are us websites. Some users say that it doesn't work on uk models but I see you're from the UK.
Will that mod work in the UK? Do you know of websites or places in the UK that sell it? I found on ebay but the seller is from the US unfortunately. |

I have checked the fit clutch stop and cdv delete, both look easy(especially the first one); the second will probably require that I go to a garage that understand this stuff.
I couldn't get much info about the transmission mount, other than on the link you've provided. Do you know anywhere where they show how to install it(diy tutorials etc) and what exactly was the difference once you've replaced yours? |

The advise given above is perfect. One thing I will add changing gear knob to either performance one or m-sport will make day and light. Regards, Styvy |

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...gearbox+mounts Well within the capabilities of a reasonably confident DIYer. You'll need access under the car and a jack to support the transmission while you swap the mounts. Took me about 20 mins. Difference? Just improved the shift quality as claimed. With the mods I've done, changing gear has gone from something that you have to think about (and annoys) to something that you don't even think about and can focus on enjoying the car, if that makes sense.

Thanks a lot Phil, you're making things very clear to understand and all in one place. I'll be ordering all this stuff this week even though the mount seems to be quiet expensive. I'll see if I can find a better deal.
Hopefully these items will be ordered over the weekend and I'll receive them in a few weeks. I don't I will be able to do diy as I'm very new to this and I don't want to do anything wrong. Does anyone have any recommendation about a place in manchester where I can have this done? Thank you |
