Valve cover

So today I dropped off my 335i E93 for service at my local BMW dealership and was advised that the valve cover has a small crack and was quoted $1600 to do the job parts and labor. Seems high to me. Any have experienced the cost?

I bought the kit (cover, gasket, bolts) from ECS tuning for a little more than $380 shipped/no tax and had it installed at a local shop. Paid $310 on labor but that might be different in your area.

If you're handy it's a DIY job. Took a couple hours or so when I did it on our 335i. It does help to have an extra hand when you put the valve cover back on. They can make sure the cables and everything else it out of the way. Just take your time.

Insanity. The cover is $400 or so, you can DIY in a few hours with basic tools or could have a shop do it for a few hundred bucks. There is no way the total cost should exceed $6-800.

If you DIY it's pretty straightforward. 90% of the time will be spent getting other things (wiring, looms, injectors, fuel rails, PCV check valve, etc) out of the way.

You could try being up front w the dealership and say the new cover and kit is around 350 with the cover, gasket, and all new bolts, and it shouldn't be more than 3 hours labor especially at a shop that is efficient at their work and see if they come down. I wouldn't pay more than 3-400 for labor on this.

As the others have said it's bonkers they charge this. If you're willing to drive to north Jersey I'm glad to do it for you, PM me.

I was quoted about $1300 by my dealer, which is still insane. I ordered one from ECS for just under $400 and DIY, the only thing I would watch out for is torque on the bolts. Make sure you go around all the bolts and hand tighten first, then go back with a torque wrench. I think its like 7 ft-lbs, its really low and I broke the first bolt I tried to torque. You need a proper torque wrench that can go that low.

IIRC spacing in the top left corner (standing infront bumper) will give a little fight to uninstall and install. Def a DIY though.

You can definitely do it yourself.

Buy the whole kit from ECS for ~400. Save the $1200. Buy yourself a nice dinner.

There is a very good DIY on this forum under the DIY's. I just did this last weekend. ECS tuning has a very good DIY in a PDF on this DIY link, that you can download and print off. Step by step. You will need a really good small, torque wrench.

https://www.amazon.com/BikeMaster-Di...+torque+wrench

You dont need to buy all new bolts. Just buy the gasket and some gasket sealer.

https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-8218...k+gasket+maker

You can get the gasket for about $35.00 or so.

If the dealer says you have a crack in your cover, then probably take their word for it. The cover is sort of pricey. It will run you about $400.00 for a new one.

There is no way I would pay the stealership that kind of money when you can do it yourself for under $525.00 (torque wrench, gasket, and gasket maker)

This is correct price if done at the dealer. Like others said the job is not difficult but time consuming and requires patience.

The dealer really is amazing. Mine only quoted $1100 for the VC. Oh and $800 for front brakes and rotors. And $1300 for a windshield!

I always wondered how many soccer moms just swipe and pay it. Guessing a lot.

Soccer moms drive Chevrolets and Fords though.
