For some reason I always figured the 'ring to be a decent and profitable business. The article basically phrases it to be a money pit surrounded by tons of controversy.

This is really huge news for the automotive industry. I wonder who the 10 or so interested parties are.

Can anyone shed more light on the story? Is the 'ring an unprofitable business? Sounds like a whole lot of controversy.

The 'ring sale price is almost 165 million USD. How many active members are here? 8,000? Hey, if all BimmerPost members here throw down $21,000 we can make history as the coolest online group buy.

I think it would be key for a German automaker to buy this out and maintain it for what it is. If they would even do that. Who knows what will happen.. have to hope for the best and that this iconic track will stay afloat and alive in the right hands.

This is depressing... I really hope whoever buys it keeps the enthusiast in mind. I have always wanted to drive on this track, and if I can't I think I will actually be sad. I know this is a stretch but I wish Porsche, Benz, and BMW would team up to buy it and continue everything like normal. I'm sure they could spend that kind of cash in a three way, and then just get some side revenue every month from the ring.

So sad

there's got to be some exception for objects/monuments of German Culutural Heritage?

What about an Enthusiast collective? Surely we can gather 125,000 souls willing to plop down 1000 euros, no?

Yes I would be very surprised if the average joe is barred from the track. Touristenfahrten will continue. Will the new owners increase the cost of a lap to whatever the market will bear? Perhaps. That'd suck. It's already like $40/cdn per lap.

The ring was doing well when it was just a race track. But they tried to expand it with a hotel, amusement park, and roller coaster(wtf), etc. That's why they failed.

On another note, there are prob way more than 8000 members here. I bet we could buy the ring if all members chip in $2k ...

It's not about how much it costs to buy it. It's about how much it costs to maintain it. Post pointed out it costed over 400 million euros over last few years.

Yeah 400 mil to upkeep a broken roller coaster, all the other wasted "upgrades," etc. The actual tracks are probably closer to 50 mil I bet. They need someone to streamline the expenditures on the place.

I wonder what Mr. Eccelstone will do??

I know there are a few shaikh's that have that pocket change that would buy the ring. Why is it that they are assuring everyone that a Shaikh is not in the bidding? Just curious.

Here is the sad part. Driving on the ring is on my bucket list. If they privatize it then we may never set rubber on it. Ever. I truly hope that if a sale is complete, that they would keep some of the traditions alive.

Wow - Germans already hate the EU... Lost to Greece last summer in soccer and now this...

Just keep on shoveling their money into indebted countries and they're going to SNAP!

I disagree, privatizing might not be a bad thing. Things always go to shit when the government gets there hands on things here in the states, looks at the post office! They lose millions! I say sell it to a wealthy enthusiast who can make it better than ever and keep it a front runner

Now. What's Germany going to do w/ the $$$ when it sells? Piss it away on helping the socialist failing counties in the EU?? I think they have cut off Greece...Maybe they should pay back the taxes they took from the people...ok, off my soap box.

Stay positive people!
