Being a BMW driver...

I thought this was rather humorous until I started going through more of the user comments:

http://jalopnik.com/5950993/this-is-...?post=53557634

A lot of these people seem to be down-right hostile to BMWers specifically.

One aspect that has always made me a little hesitant about buying a Bimmer has been that perception of being a "BMW driver". In the end, I wanted what I wanted and got it—other people's perceptions be damned.

But I'm curious. Has anyone here experienced that sort of vitriol, simply because of the car you drive? I suspect it's a rare thing to experience IRL. It's probably more prevalent online thanks to the warm, secure embrace of anonymity that it provides to the craven.

It's like everything else in life. You know people are talking about you but never to your face. Also it's not like BMW is the only marque that has that problem. Mercedes and Audi have their stereotypes. Honda definitely has it as well. People can talk about "BMW drivers" all they want but if you're not that type of driver they're referring to, who cares - enjoy the car.

My thought too! If you really like the car, then if you don't drive it because of other people's perceptions, then you're not being true to yourself. You should buy things and use them because you like them or because they're fit for the purpose for which they're used, not because of what people will think about you.

And, if you're a good, nice person, you'll be doing your part to improve the negative image of BMW drivers

It's no use..
I lost count of how many times I've been the object of some raging fucker's anger in some shit box on the road.
Image is useless in this day and age of psychos man.
Just do the right thing, using a healthy dose of horse sense on the road and keep your rage to a minimum every day and hope for the best.
I'm a side note I think somethings wrong with this damn mobile app yet again - OP's post is blank

Just a massive door ding on my front fender, into the body line.
still makes me sad.

people always think im some kid who doesnt have to pay for everything because I have rich parents. When in reality. I was in foster care and worked hard to get away from that life.

This would have never happened if I had a 87' camry!

While I don't take up two spots I always try to get an end spot in a parking lot like next to a curb or something and park very close to that so there's a lot of room on the other side of the spot to try to avoid dings. Its worked so far, knock on wood. And no, I don't do this because I drive a BMW, I do this even when I drive my moms RAV4. We have a right to protect our property, no matter what we drive.

People with nice things are often typecast as being materialistic and snobby by those without. If they don't hate me for my car, they'll probably hate me for my designer clothes, nice townhouse, hot girlfriend, or something else I've earned through years of hard work and dedication.

In the real world people don't care what you drive. Don't act like an ass and nobody will really give you a second look. BMW's are a dime a dozen.

Yes, random people will know these intricate things about you

Nobody cares what you are doing, get over yourself, no offense of course...

There are many people out there who have nice things and have money. Again if you just mind your business no one cares.

People only know what they see, and they tend to jump to conclusions based on that.

I can relate. People have the perception that BMW drivers are assholes and if you are young you get labeled as a kid who has everything handed to you. That being said, people can be very shallow and are quick to judge.

I like the BMW stereotype. I just wish the cars had more headroom, because it's hard to fit my head inside of the car

You know, I kind of sympathize with the guy in the photo. Probably got one too many door dings and decided he's never parking right next to a careless idiot again. If the other drivers had a modicum of respect for other people and their property, this probably never would have happened.

Well, I find myself doing stuff to my BMW that I would never do to a "normal" car. As in waxing the barrels of the wheels, or (as I just did) carefully spray painting the rolled edges of my exhaust tips and polishing the outsides. It's such a great machine that you have to respect it and care for it. Unfortunately others don't see it that way sometimes.

I don't park in two spaces, but I definitely look for the space next to the curb or cart return to cut my chances of picking up a ding in half, and if the lot isn't full I'll just park at the far end or walk. If I can't do that and I have a choice, I'll park next to something black and shiny and with nice looking rims, I figure that guy will at least respect my stuff as I do his.

Being young and in school people ALWAYS ask if I'm rich and spoiled just because of all the things I have. As Andy said, people will stereotype us as materialistic based of the car. I can't tell you how many times I've been used as an example of materialistic. Luckily for me, I give two shits. It's sad that because I car about my things I'm an asshat lol.

I don't take up 2 spaces but I do park as far away from other cars and enjoy the walk to my destination. But on occasion I will get some jackwagon who will invade my personal space for no other reason than to aggravate me and ruin my trek back.

Picture is totally without context. Could be that that person owns both those spaces...
