i want this to be true, but I have to doubt for the following reason...
BMW is just now seeing the first 2008 535i models hitting show rooms. Add 90 hp to those and you are surpassing the 550i 365 hp. Who would bother buying the 2008+ 550i any more? |

The same people who think the 535i has more power than the 335i because it has a higher first number.

My boss rode in my PROceded car. He asked me to check the deal on getting out of his 4 month old 530 and into a 535. Conservative/Boss overtaken by "holy crap". Business model for BMW is ...confusing.

If they are in danger of losing a significant percentage of sales due to lack of HP, and the engine can handle it, why not make the HP upgrade an option? This year there is some strong competition in this particular class after all. And it may be getting stronger for the 2008 models. Maybe BMW marketing has determined that this type of move has merit?
Of course if the engine can't take it, and/or it wouldn't result in a significant increase in sales, then why do it? BTW, what did BMW do to the "ringer" cars they gave to car magazine reviewers? |

Sesegal, I see you took alot of BS for sharing information with us. I would like to thank you for sharing and I hope it true. If we can get another 90 HP, wow. If only we could find gas for under $3.00! Thanks again and please keep us posted.

Rumor may be more than a rumor
I am not sure where I just read this, but it was last night. That the 08' 335's will have a performance option of extra HP and a few other goodies, upgraded brakes I think. The lights will be a tad different.
Maybe someone knows the article I read? It was an official net post, I believe by a magazine. |

Does it make your penis grow also? . Cmon, that is a total BS. BMW would never release a software that would make yoru car gain 90whp for $500. I hate when sources of info like that leak, it is an insult.

The fact of the matter is, that it is really that simple. The procede does it already so its not impossible.

There will be an upgrade sooner or later. Business as usual. Those figures are just high hopes, though. They should extract 15-20hp more by 2009 to keep competitive.

I have no idea whether BMW will ever market anything like this. Sounds like a great idea if the 5th cyl. cooling issue is resolved. I do know that variants of the N54 with significantly more power were in R&D way back before the 335 was released.
All I can say is, wow, what a way to start off your new accessories unit. You would have a ton of 335 owners lined up for this, and a LSD, and brakes, and coilovers, sway bars, wheels, etc. And Infinity, Audi, MB, Lexus, etc. would be left out in the cold in the sports sedan/coupe market segment.

BMW is definitely entering into the "aftermarket performance" segment. Just don't know if it will include software for the 335i. If a horsepower increase costs them more in warranty liability for engines, turbochargers, transmissions, differentials, etc, etc...then it wouldn't make sense for them to increase the power too much. But even if it were a 30HP increase for $1500, and no warranty implications, then I suspect many people would jump all over it.

Are you sure the 5th cly is overheating with more power?
StressDoc, do you have Procede or any uppower upgrades? Are you sure about that (5th Cly overheating issue)? I mean how do we know that it wont be a long term issue for us who want to purchase?

I wouldnt be surprised to see a mild performance increase, like 10-15 hp coupled with a ZHP package, but it seems unlikely that we will see a 500 dollar factory flash offering 90hp!

It is hard to believe that BMW would offer a $500 product for the BMW 335i that makes 110 engine hp wouldn't you think so? |

As far as BMW doing this, I don't see any chance it happens. First off, with stock turbos and exhaust there isn't 90 HP on the table, more like 50-60 as shiv, omar, and Jeff have demonstrated. But even if you consider more realistic numbers like say 30-40HP for $1000.00 why would BMW want to do that retroactively when they can simply do it going forward? We already know there is going to be a price increase, why not just bump up the base 335i numbers to around 315 HP and offer a ZHP with 340 HP plus a LSD and upgraded brakes for 3500 more? One of car companies favorite things to do is to convince you the model you buy is the ultimate in technology, that is until the next year model comes out making you want to dump the old one to upgrade to the new and improved version. Hell, they did this with the e46 330 ZHP then later with the 2006 M3 even though it was heading into it's last year of production with the competition package. I remember thinking WTF, the model is heading out next year and they come out with a new color and sport package then I saw how many folks started posting about how they had sold their old M3 to buy a Competition Package. I hate to say it, but I do think they will offer an upgrade to the ECU but it will be for new buyers, not those of us whose money they already have. And all this talk about cutting into M3 sales is silly. The M division is not where BMW makes its money. More "regular" 3 series sales is what the company is founded on making up the majority of sales and profits. I would bet BMW sold more non-m e46's in a year than total e46 m3 sales. They will sell all the M3's they decide to make but increasing 3 series sales is what will continue their growth as a compay going forward. |

Everyone needs to get off the LSD in a ZHP kick.
BMW will NEVER do it. They stopped doing LSDs in non M cars in the late 90's. DSC, DTC, xyz..... they feel non M cars don't need an LSD. e46 ZHP was alot more than 3500 and with NO LSD or uprated brakes. I owned one and it was a great car. |
