Can one use Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W-30 oil in a 2009 335d?
It says it meets VW 502 00/505 00/505 01, MB229.51.
This oil is used by VW and Audi in their diesel engines.
Please advise

That oil isn't used in the new diesels released by VW/Audi. The new diesels require 507.00 certification.

Best thing you can do is call BMW Service up from your car......they will give you a definate answer.........trusting your engine's longevity to someone on the internet who may or may not be right is not a good idea IMO.

i called up the dealer and they want you to use the BMW engine oil.

Must say BMW LL04 approved on bottle. I used Mobile 1 esp 5/30. I have always used Mobile 1 in my cars and have never used Castrol oils. I went with the Mobile 1 esp. It meets all the LL04 and is listed as BMW approved on the bottle.

Like Scott, I've used Mobil 1 ESP 5w40 on all my oil changes so far, and I am very satisfied. I sent in an oil analysis a few months ago and the results indicated the oil was a very good match for the 335d. My brother posted the results on the Bob is the Oil Guy Forum, if anybody is interested.

I'd use Redline. I've asked Mike Miller from TechTalk@Roundel magazine and this is what he recommends. In his opinion the Long Life oil with additional detergents doesn't hold water in trying to maintain your vehicle. As long as you change the oil regularly you should be fine. I plan on taking his advice and when I change the oil after the break in period, I'll be Redline all the way. He even brings his own brand to dealer oil changes just so it stays consistent. Its all in how far you're willing to go to maintain your vehicle.

YES!!!

This the exact oil BMW dealerships in the U.S. currently use for the diesel (It's sold in Castrol bottles, not BMW branded). You have nothing to worry about. It's a C3 "Low SAPs" oil which is what you need.

The MB 229.51 specification exceeds LL04 per Lubrizol.

Its time to get my D an oil change. What do you guys say about the following oil? The only gripe is that i am getting 5W40 instead of 5w30. Does it make any considerable difference?

I use Castrol 5W-30 Professional from the dealer, because I know the guy and he sold it for $6 per quart and OE filter.
I basically change the oil out every 5000 miles as I don't drive much.
I use a suction pump and suck out the oil.
I am sure MB engine oil for diesels should be good enough.

Since i had an e60 535d I can tell you anything less than Castrol Edge 5w30 or 0w30 is bad for yo, you need a LL04 for dpf cars

Might lower your mileage by an immeasurable amount, but it's summertime and will be fine. It's an LL-04, so is perfect.

The BMW LL-04 specification is so restrictive it's unlikely that any oil that meets it will have significant differences in performance except in very severe (racetrack or 125 mph+ cruising or daily Death Valley) severe conditions.

Being from CA, not sure how easy it is for you to get LL04 products. The OE Castrol can be mail ordered from a few sponsors out there as part of a OC Kit. Its a decent oil, not fantastic, not horrible. If out of warranty I see no issue running 5/40 as its within spec for the engine in other countries, just not here for fuel economy.

Europe has more of the LL04 rated products as they have far more D's then we. Personally I will use Mobil ESP once out of warranty. While in warranty, I just let the dealer use the Castrol (which will run about 4 more OC's untill 100K
