HOV LANE
The hov lane on the highway is useless
I got passed by a school bus while stuck behind an old man and his Buick going 110 in the left lane side by side with a trailer Really..... Come on Canada let's drive the economy better and get me home faster so I can spend money, and not follow retired people in the left lane all the way home. End of rant |

HOV lane is the best thing in the world when I am with my family when I get to that dame Hwy. 401 & Hwy. 404 log-jam (and passing the Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, ...).

I think most of the users on the 404 SB use the HOV lane as a passing lane so they can get onto the DVP faster. I once saw a 3-car accident in the HOV lane with all three cars having only one person in them. I wonder how they explained this to the cops when they arrived...

The fine for improper use of the HOV lane is $110 and 3 demerit points. The cops are quite active catching drivers on the 403 HOV lanes during rush hour - don't know about 404.

I agree with HOV lanes but I disagree with them at 11:30 pm at night...a lot of major cities have HOV lanes set for rush hour (eg. Los Angeles, Washington DC.)

I've seen a few times when the cop stops inside the tunnel where the HOV lane merges to 401 west from 404 south.

Yeah, it does not make much sense during non-rush hours.
It is still better than some other cities. In Houston, they have a single HOV lane than goes one way during morning rush hour and the opposite in the evening. All other times, its closed - and no shoulder with concrete barriers on each side. All it takes is one bad car and you're stuck for hours. |

I feel your pain and we are in the west coast not doing any better than Ontario.
Anyone from the Greater Vancouver Area please comment this stupid BC government policy of using HOV lanes. If you drive along Hastings and Broadway area in Vancouver you simply notice HOV lanes used to be for BUS, car pool vechicles with min 2 people, bikes etc... They changed that to BUS and Bike only.... WHY??? during rush hours, if you want to drive to school/work on back home it takes forever.... Something is definitely wrong with our government!!!

I would more aggravated about the ridiculous 407 costs here. I mean if they set it to be a bit more reasonable, it would certainly help balance things out in certain areas.

I commute to Hamilton from Toronto for work and when i'm on nights traffic along the QEW/403 is brutal. The nightly commute has several slow downs, none of which were helped by the introduction of the HOV lane on the QEW, in fact i'd argue they've made it worse.
The biggest issue with the QEW HOV is people don't know how to effectively merge with traffic (or let people merge), as a result it creates slow downs. These slow downs happen at every interchange and the worst one is at the end of the HOV, just before the QEW and 403 split. It is common for traffic to essentially stop up to 5 km away from this interchage because of the traffic turbulence created by driers trying to get from the HOV to the far right lane so they can go on the 403. Most of the time now i just cut up to the 407 and take the $6 charge so i can get to work with a minimum of agitation. The other night I was making good time so i decided to not take the 407, as a result i barely made it to my base in time. |

How's that area of the 407 (QEW-401) in terms of speed traps? Are there any cops?

407 sucks... total rip off and they're crooks - there are still more speed traps than I've ever seen on the 401, and 403. I refuse to get taxed even more to use a highway.
HOV lanes are great when I'm by myself, stuck in rush hour traffic, with old men driving slow in the left lane! LOL Always so tempted to just cross over that solid line and speed in that beautiful open lane... |
