Wastegate rattle and BMWNA
My 335i CPO warranty runs out in one month. I have a bit of wastegate rattle and the dealer confirmed that yes it is wastegate rattle and the turbo's need to be replaced but BMWNA denies the claim because there is no fault code. My actuators have been replaced already due to wastegate rattle. I have called BMWNA 3 times and they say that there is nothing wrong with my car because there is no fault code so there is nothing that they can do. I brought up SI B01 02 12 and told them that I don't understand that under one warranty (the extended 8yr/82k) that turbos are replaced for rattle but under my paid CPO warranty that covers the turbos they will not replace them due to rattle. Frustrating is an understatement at this point. Also the claims lady says there is no one else to speak with. The dealer said the only number they have is the BMWNA 800 number. Is it a losing battle at this point or are there any other ways to pursue the issue?

My understanding is that if the dealer replaced the actuators and the rattle still persists, they are to replace the turbos next.

That was my understanding as well but I assume they are looking for the 30ff low boost code before they will replace anything. I am waiting on a call back from BMWNA but I have a feeling I will not make any progress.

No. Wastegate rattle does not throw a code. I would open a case on this one, something isn't right. Sounds like you have a BMW NA rep that has no idea what's going on... There's a service bulletin out there which accompanies they extended turbo warranty (82k miles) that I think references rattle, but no faults. You might want to present that doc to the rep to see if it helps. You also may want to try to (politely) speak with their supervisor on the subject.
Just my $.02 I had my turbos replaced at 44k. No fault codes, no hastle.

Yea bud you shouldnt have to be dealing with this whatsoever. There giving you a bunch of B.S. in my honest opinion and having CPO warranty ALONG with the service bulletin for wastegate rattle for turbos should have you COMPLETELY covered, no questions asked. Especially since they already replaced your actuators and the rattle still persists. If I was you I would take it to another dealership and make sure you take ALL your mods off, just to be on the safe side since they are giving you a hard time for absolutely NO reason. And Envuks is right, wastegate rattle doesnt throw any codes or non that I have ever heard of.
If you still continue to have issues you might want to inform your attorney so maybe he can give them a call once he goes over the service bulletin and your CPO warranty...

I recently had a similar issue. My non dealer shop did a vacuum test on the front turbo and told me I wasnt able to hold even 4lbs of boost. so i took it to the dealer and the SA said 'no code, no dice'. But i was persistent and suggested that their tech also do a vac test. It came back as unable to hold even 1lb of boost. But the SA warned me that without a code they had a problem getting things covered by warranty. I had to agree to a possible labor charge of 300 bucks for them to continue the diagnosis in hopes of having enough physical evidence to get things covered. Eventually I got a call saying all is well and that I had 2 new turbos. So it is possible without a code. You just need a SA and tech who are willing to put the case to BMWNA. I noted on the job notes that the tech also preformed something called a 'drill bit test'. I have no idea what that is, but maybe your dealership does and they can add that to the case?

Just got off the phone with BMWNA and the most frustrating 10 minutes of my life. She said there is no one else to speak with and my warranty is different from the 8year/82k that is expired. My next step is to make this thing throw a 30ff lol

Did she give an explanation as to how your warrarnty is different and how it's expired? Your car is definitely not 8 years old and I assume it doesn't have 82k on it. I guess you could always pull a vacuum hose to make it throw a code.

Yeah my car is over 82k. I am going to talk to my SA when I pick my car up tomorrow but I am almost out of energy with this. I am just going to write bmw an email addressing my disappointment with the company. Time to throw the JB4 on it and hopefully silence the rattle. Thanks for the help and guys with CPO get it fixed before 82k or prepare to be screwed by BMW.

I know this thread isn't active but it seemed a good place to post my wastegate story in case it might help someone.
A couple of weeks ago I took my 08 335i at 65k miles in to a local dealership telling them I was 95% sure my wastegates were rattling. It was different than others I've seen on YouTube in that mine only rattled in gear at flat throttle around 2200 RPM. No noise at idle or by just revving the engine in neutral. First trip in (2 days) they tightened some heat shield bolts and called it fixed - it wasn't. Next trip was a week and a half in and after telling me again at 3 days they were 100% sure it wasn't wastegates, they finally concluded after placing microphones all over my engine that it was - both front and rear. They quoted me $2700 to adjust them which I knew was bs and wouldn't fix anything. They said they couldn't proceed under the extended wastegate warranty because I had no codes thrown and it was just rattling. I of course picked up my car. That day I call another dealership about 30 miles away from the first and they said to bring it in. While I was there, the shop foreman told me that they absolutely could (and have many times) work under the settlement warranty without codes thrown. I got a call today and they confirmed they are worn out beyond adjustment and are replacing both turbos at no charge!!! Point being is definitely do not take what one dealer says if they fight you on it. Stupid really because they missed out on a good paying warranty job. I have no idea why. I'm certainly switching all of my business to the second dealership from now on. |
