I think it depends on the jurisdiction as to what time it comes, but I know in Alexandria they send out the notice in August and they have to be paid in full by October. It does only come once a year, unless you sell/dispose of a car - then they'll send it from the date of your last payment to when you got rid of the car.

Ya, I got mine this week. I assumed they raised the tax rate. I bought my car 12/08, so last year was a full tax year, but yet i'm getting charged more this year? I'll have to double check what I paid last year, but I know I did not pay $1200. I though it was more around $800....but again i'll have to double check.

Apparently my car is worth $40000. If only they had to put their money where their mouth is, and their assessment could be treated as an offer for purchase. Oh, your offering $40,000? I'll take it!

Ok, went home and checked. Last year, my car was assessed at 35,700. Which admittedly might be a little low considering the MSRP 1 year previous was over $50,000. But anyway, this year the car is assessed at $40,075. Apparently my car is increasing in value with age. Interesting.

You paid $10? I show a copy of my most recent LES and they waive the entire fee. Or are you talking about registration?

When I lived in Burke, VA from 1997-1999, I remember Republican Jim Gilmore ran his campaign for governor promising to get rid of the hated car tax... He won the election in November 1997, so what happened?

Without getting into a political discussion, Mark Warner (D) happened.

When Governor Gilmore was elected, a repeal of the car tax began in stages under the Personal Property Tax Relief Act of 1998. That's why today, the first $20,000 of a car's value aren't fully assessed for personal property taxes.

But in all fairness, I think when the repeal of the car tax began under Governor Gilmore, it ended up costing far more than was expected. Not making an excuse, but from what I remember that is what kept it from being fully implemented...

It ended up costing who far more than expected? It certainly didn't cost the taxpayers who got to keep a little more of their hard-earned money...

Ha ha. Touche.

I should say that it ended up taking more out of the state coffers than the state estimated!

Found mine in the mail yesterday. I think it was around $350. What % of the car's value is the tax, 5? So its tax = (value-20k) * tax% ? Making my car worth $27k? Sounds about right to me.

It depends on the jurisdiction I think, but in Alexandria it is calculated at a rate of $4.75 per $100 (4.75%) of the "assessed" value of the vehicle. So 5% isn't that far off.

In the city of manassas Park, even if you have owner ship of the car for less than a year you have to pay the full amount for the year. This city is in need of cash, have of the residents dont have any money. If you look at the local market here.

Gilmore knew he couldnt pull it off when he ran... I have never... ever.. ever... seen a tax implemented then taken away... I would have gladly forked over the money if it was getting rolled into (not HOT lane) expansion of 495, and finishing FFX County Pkway, doing something about rt. 7, you know.. generally fixing NoVA highway issues... but that being said.. MD is ten times worse. bottom line is you cannot live in the DC area and not get tax raped.. doesnt matter which party is office, or what the name of the governor at the time is.

How? I never had to pay property taxes on my vehicles until I moved to VA. Even when I had an apt in VA but was still a MD resident and had my Jeep registered in MD, my effing apt complex reported me and the state made me pay property tax on the Jeep.
