PLEASE HELP : E90 320d engine oil change <<<<<
Hello,
I am just about to change engine oil in my 2006 320d E90 manual. I have a few questions regarding this : 1. Is Castrol Edge 5W40 all right ? 2. How much oil do I need ? 3. How to change oil filter ? I would be really greatful if you could help me I think I can find the bolt underneath the car to take the old oil out. Thank you, Mat

There is a guide on the forum for changing your oil and the filter, find that and study it if your not confident going at it blind.
You should really use a low saps bmw specific grade 5W30 oil. Ignore the brand and focus on the rating and the grade. Have a look on opie oils as they have a good range for about £40 a gallon. You will need 5.5L. |

I just found this here on this forum :http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4768
Thats for 325i E90, so its a lot easier. I think I need to take engin cover off to change oil filter on 320d. Its even harder to change air filter. Ohhh that nasty 320d engine configuration

No need to take the engine cover off for oil filter change but you will need a very large socket wrench...36mm iirc. The filter is nothing like that in that thread.
I haven't done the air filter yet but it looks ridiculously complicated to me! |

I am wondering if I should buy K&N air filter or not. It takes 2.5 hours to complete the job I found. Here it is : http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2570370 Forum member (Tawia) took on such job :P

For the 320d I need to use LongLife-04 right ? 0W-30 oil is LongLife-01, so I suppose it wouldnt be suitable for 320d.

A light service like that will take you an hour, nothing to worry about.
Here is a spec list of the oil I listed previously. It has all the necessary requirements for our engines. http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?p...uct_title=5w30 Carlube Triple R Fully Synthetic C3 |

Ohhh, 20 min. is really quick if thats true. If you have done a lot of them its easy then, but in my case it is 1st time so its gonna take a lot of time lol.

Yeah, I think I will get the oil you mensioned. It meets the sepc and is a great price. I am just wondering if it will last for a year as I do servicing every year.

Well, it helped the fact I was replacing them on a daily basis, but with a large selection of tools and the right technique they are fine to do. I would say for a job at home they are chewy because getting the airbox to sit back together properly is a total mission. It may seem correct but it probably wont be.

Both 0W30 and 5W30 are LL4, so really id does not matter to be honest with you, but as the member of the forum says the better option is 5W30, because of a density or grade. I do not know what these numbers represent to be honest with you. The oil which has a 'Turbo Diesel' label on it and also LL-04 specification is 5W40, its here : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-LITRE-CASTRO...item1e63368e77

The very simple way to view oil ratings, albeit it not the whole truth is that the first number is representative of minimum operating temperature. So 0W which stands for 0 Winter will effectively lubricate from a lower temperature than a 5W or 10W and so on.
The second number as has been explained to me is of heat resistance before degradation. So a 30 is quite thin and good for high efficiency engines, a 60 will be thicker and provide more resistance, but will take a healthy amount of abuse. In my weekend car I run 5W40 in the winter, and 10W50 in the summer when I can rely on warm weather and do a few trackdays. |

What do you thik about this one : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Castrol-Power-...item2563f02397 It is 10W30 and its not LL-04 spec, so I doubt such buy. I will get 5W30 oil, which is good for all year long, kind of :P
