335d oil change - how much oil?

How much oil is needed for an oil and filter change on the 2011 335d? The Owner's Manual doesn't give an oil capacity. The dealer spec 8 qts, but I suspect it may take a little less. Don't want to overfill. Thanks.

Not sure why you would assume that the BMW specs would be wrong. My 330i say 7 qts and that is exactly what it takes.

You've never had an e46 M3 serviced by a BMW dealership - - who universally filled it with 7 litres (the TWS comes in litre bottles) even though it only takes 6 -- and they continue to do so even today (thereby overfilling it a tidy amount), in spite of the fact that BMW NA long ago issued a Service information Bulletin to stop the practice.

I'm guessing that BMW specs 7 litres for the 335d (which comes out to a little less than 7.5 quarts - - the Castrol SLX diesel oil comes in quart bottles).

Blah, I am about ready to do another $200+ Tischer order for 8 quarts of LL-04 oil and a 2.5 gallon container of DEF. Maintenance

P.S. DEF fluid cover takes a little careful prying from the back when pushing on the front. That reminds me, need to find a better funnel...

You are correct I haven't had a e46 M3. Now your concern makes sense. Sorry if I came off like a smart ass.

Not at all. It doesn't take much to confound service personnel. The overfill with the e46 M3 was really funny. You could just not get the people to put in 6 "bottles" when they were conditioned it seems to put in 7 (in spite of what the factory service bulletin said). But in the case of the M3 it was a pain because with the 1 qt + overfill the oil temps actually ran slightly hotter (counter intuitive I know).

If dealer does the oil change, check receipt to make sure that they used LL-04 oil and put in 8 quarts. Once I got my car back on Friday after an oil change, and on Saturday I got a warning of a quart low. I had to go to a dealer and pay $25 for a quart of oil. I checked the dealer service report and it showed 7 quarts. So now I keep a quart sitting around because I know of no local stores which carry LL-04 oil.

John: Thanks again for the link. Very useful site.
Quasimodem: There is a BMW LL04 oil available at most auto parts stores, if you ever get in a bind for an extra quart. It is Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 (emission system protection) - - not to be confused with Mobil 1 5w30 EP (extended protection). I've seen a couple of UOAs (used oil analysis) over on the BITOG forum and it seems to work quite well in the 335d. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ula_5W-30.aspx

Depending on color of dipstick it is 8.2 quarts (red) or 8.0 ( black).
