right, but then again the difference can be insignificant when you put all pros and cons on the table.

Would need to do straight math and see what the outcome is. Unless a car breaksdown and there is major repairs (risk of ownership out of warranty) then the reward should tip the scale. Someone may think $10k is worth it to not buy but lease, some may not. A lot depends on the timing of the lease during the year as well(seasonality of the prices- new model year etc).

Example: a friend of mine drives on average 20-25Kmi/year (mostly on business). In 2007, he leased a BMW 328xi coupe with Prem, Nav, and Sat radio. His payment was $600/month. He also prepaid for the extra miles (included in the monthly bill).
Now, maintenance free, repairs free - well mostly, and in 3 years a new car...

in 7 years he would pay ~$50K for 3 cars + gas @ ~$27K. this is about the same you paid for your car ownership. No need for lift, tools, garage and no time invested in repairs.
So is leasing a better option?
What's missing is I drive 38,000 miles a year not 25,000. Using the little knowledge of leasing I have, but I see advertized lease payments for a 3-series for about $380/month for 3 years and 36,000 total miles. I think I've seen extra mileage gets added on at around $0.30 per mile (for a 30,000 mile overage for each car). So I calculate all that to be $87,000 for 200,000 miles over 3 leased cars and with $27K in gas cost included. Add in $4,500 in tires that I bought (you didn't account for that), and you are up to about $92K vs. my $76.5K. Besides, the lift, tools, garage and time invested in repairs is part of my hobby, not what I consider a necessity to keep a car for 200,000 miles. The other two cars I took to 200K I did not have the lift and garage, and I had a somewhat less elaborate tool set.

So I've saved $15K more than your friend, have a cool garage to play in on the weekends; and I still have a nice car with no monthly payment.

And I have my car after 200,000 miles and will get another 50,000 out of it, if not another 100,000 miles.

Very nice write up about your car it sounds like its got plenty of life left in it. My first BMW was a 1983 320i that I bought off an old lady who had drove it for 200k since she bought it new. then sold it to me for 500$ I drove it another 55k and sold it to some guy for the same as I paid originally and always wondered how long it would have ran for. Keep it going as long as you can. Good luck

Efthreeoh, no disrespect or anything like that. I am just discussing the options given your example. My car 2006 325i with 94Kmi right now and I have thought about what next a few times. So far the car has been good so I am keeping it. and BTW, thanks for sharing your experience and details - it makes us more confident in our e90's.

Anyway, in 7 years you average 28Kmi not 38. Also, cost of tires will be offset due to you get new tires with every new car you lease; the same goes for repairs and maintenance (i.e. I spend practically $0 on repairs for my car until it hit 83000mi and maintenance was dirt cheap). So lets assume it is $76K vs $85 in 7 years makes leasing much more attractive option.

also, if my friend's car was optioned out same as yours, his lease would be significantly less.

p.s. just saying...

p.s. just saying...
No disrespect taken. I've never seen where any respected financial management person or publication has judged leasing as a better option for personal use of an automobile. Business use with write-offs is a different matter altogether. Ask your friend if he would lease if all his miles were for personal use.

And no disrespect, but you have a few things wrong: 1) if your friend drives his leased car for three years and 75,000 miles (3 x 25,000) he will buy at least one or maybe two sets of tires - your calculation doesn't account for that; 2) at the end of 200,000 miles and he stops leasing he has no car where as I do; 3) My current commute of 800 miles a week (800 x 48 weeks) comes out to 38,000 a year. Looking at the actual data it's really 33,000/year because I drive some of my other vehicles to work once in awhile; also you used 7 years where the actual time I've had my car up through 194,000 miles (which is my recorded data in my spreadsheet - I haven't updated the mile and fuel costs from 194,000 to 200,000 yet) is 6.47 years. The first year I only drove 22K miles (I had a different commute).

Considering my car is worth maybe $4,000 and tires cost him $4,500 (that's what I've paid), the savings is at least $8,500 using comparitive cost elements (i.e. tire costs). Now, I don't know all the ins and outs of leasing, and what all the upfront costs are, or what the maintenance and repair costs are for going over the allotted mileage per car (I don't see those costs in your numbers either - yes you said he prepays for additional mileage, but you offer no specifics as to what that is), so I can't accurately estimate what his actual paid costs are (I know mine to the dollar). I don't see where leasing is the better financial option. You are assuming his costs are just his monthly lease payment and monthly fuel cost (with no maintenance costs whatsoever), which I don't think is represenative of all the costs he pays, or would have to pay.

I doubt if a lease company would even lease a car with terms that allow for pre-payment of miles at a rate of 33,000 per year. The purpose of a lease (for personal use) is to limit the miles on the car to retain most of the car's value so it can be sold as a CPO when it is 3 years old and low miles. My yearly mileage would not allow for that; a 3 year old car with 100,000 miles (33K x 3) would not have any residual value as a CPO as it would not allow for reasale as a CPO because there is no mileage left to give a warranty up to 6 years or 100,000 miles.

Finally, not trying to be a jerk here; but right now, at 200,000 miles, I pay basically $560 per month in total operating costs: $400 in gas and $160 in maintenance cost (based on my average yearly maintenance cost). Your friend would be paying $1,000 a month: $400 in gas and $600 lease payment. I just don't see the advantage in leasing for personal use.

Congratulations. Its good to see a naturally aspirated BMW straight 6 cross 200K miles.

Now, can someone post the highest mileage they have on a turbocharged & direct injected motor. It would be very interesting to see what it takes to get there.

Congratulations well done on a great write up ...

one day when I have time (being retired now and so busy around the house ) I shall make a similar write up on our now high milage 1987 BMW 535is still going strong. Our daughter owns now what was my first ever BMW ... we just toasted her (the car not my daughter) 25th birthday. I do have all the service records and should organize and post them some day ...

Yes the BMW if well taken care of will indeed take good care of you!

Safe driving on the next 200K and thanks again for sharing.

Thanks for posting. This is a beacon of light for all n52 owners. Also shows that bmw does know what they're talking about when it comes to maintenance intervals!

you're a freaking boss... Drive her to the ground!!!! I'm the second owner of a 06 325i with basically everything you have on your car except the bluetooth hahaha (had 19k miles on it in 2009 and Its up to 78,000 miles now). Glad to know its going strong!

Just out of curiosity, how would I know when I need to change my spark plugs? I have been doing my oil changes every 8,000 & I change my brake pads and tires when I need to... clean my K&N when I need to... but their are other aspects to the maintenance of the car that I am unaware of & do not know how to handle properly. Can You share some insight on these things to get the most out of the car? Thanks!

Why not just buy the Bentley service manual? It has all the information you need. I racked up almost 100,000 miles before the Bentley even was published in 2009/10, so I went to the BMW TIS site and reviewed and downloaded a lot of E90 service information. Basically the CBS tells you when to do service. Everything else is at 100,000 mile intervals as stated elsewhere in this thread. Or you could read the owners manual like I did.

As a fellow 325er with 102,000 miles....

You are my Hero!

And don't discount the wisdom of choosing to work on one's own car rather than having to resort to haggling ever three years. Time better spent IMHO.

That is a car that I seriously would enjoy driving every day--that's one h*** of a car to have as your first BMW!

Today, I would love to drive a beat up (beat up is totally ok with me) 1986+ 944 with sport package. There was one on eBay for $1800 obo, and the guy said it can be driven daily and long distances as everything has been replaced over the years....I didn't go for it....my wife wanted to get a 1996 Z3 4 cyl. from the in-laws for $1500, I told her no, it's an auto, who wants that and the in-laws never give away anything for nothing, so you know it needs work....
