Exclamation New Laws in Quebec (how adapted are they to our roads?)

As of April 1st, you won't be able to talk on your cell phone while driving + you'll be losing major points (and risk the towing of your vehicle to the impound) as soon as you go over 40kmp/h.

Details on phone and handhelds new regulation:
http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/publicati...ll_illegal.pdf

The use of cell-phone and blackberrys while driving is now considered illegal in Quebec. Even if you are simply holding the device in your hands while you are driving.

Fine is 150$ and 3 demerit points

-*-*-

Details on new speeding regulation:
http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/publicati...e_speeding.pdf

Not as bad as in Ontario (where you get 10,000$ fine for street racing)

2x pts and 2x $ when doing:
- 40km/h over in a 60 or less zone
- 50km/h over in a 60-90 zone
- 60km/h over in a 100 zone

Some roads as the Villemarie in Montreal, will be impossible to drive at normal speeds with this new rule in place. A reporter in Mtl drove at the speed limit in Montreal roads for a day and got covered in insults and honks.

They definitely need to raise the speed limits if they want to seriously enforce these laws.

Where's the opposition when you need them???

Yup driving more than 150 kmh/93 mph here in ontario is considered "Street Racing". Welcome to Ontario!

There are really no excuses to hold a phone to your ear while driving since there are so many hands free devices available for a resonable price nowadays. Bluetooth headset are fairly cheap. All current Blackberries have speakerphone feature. Even my TomTom GPS navigator has Blueooth speakerphone built-in. More and more cars come with Bluetooth. Why are so many people still driving with phones to the ears???

Obviously holding a phone to your ear will impair you as you lose a hand.

But even when on a loudspeaker or headset, your brain is still not fully focused on the road and other things happening around you.

Unfortunately if you are in business, the world does not slow down for you or wait for you because you are in a car and driving. This is particularly true in today's fast pace business environment that utliizes electronic communications to the max. You miss a phone call or too late in responding to an email and you risk missing major opportunities. This is becoming a round-the-clock affair as global commerce becomes the everyday norm. Many people, including myself, simply leave the Blackberry on 24 hours a day. Companies like Telus and Bell are losing world travelling business clients to Rogers because their non-GSM phones do not work everywhere in the world. This is the world we live in; there is no escape. It won't be long before they will make the use of cell phone, email and text messages widely available on airplanes. They have already started it. Pretty soon the Toronto subway will be the only wireless blackhole left on earth. That's why they cannot ban handsfree becasue it will cost too much in lost business.
