330 Xi transmission trouble

In early June I picked up a 2006 330 Xi with an auto trans. In late December after putting about 2500 miles on it, driving at highway speeds it dropped into 3rd and would not shift up or down until the car was stopped and re-started.

The code was 4F83. The transmission was serviced at 87,500 miles, the trouble occurred at 92,000 miles. An independent mechanic changed some internal seals (including the mechatronic bridge seal), tested it and changed the fluid. They could find no trouble. They also moved the solenoid associated with that code to another location.

After getting the car back, I put another 200 miles on it and the same scenario happened again (code was 4F83). It is going back in next week.

Any input on what could be the problem or trouble shooting tips would be appreciated.

Update

An independent mechanic quoted $3100 for a junkyard transmission and $6,000 for a rebuilt transmission. After further investigation I wen to a transmission specialty shop that has rebuilt the ZF 6 speed auto(s) in the past.

They indicated about $3,500 for a rebuild. I am waiting for that to be finished. Will post an update after it is complete and I have driven it for a while.

So what exactly was the problem? At 92K it seems too early to have trans issues.

E clutch burned up, and a bushing. Seperator plate damaged. They used a master rebuild kit, replaced the solenoids, seperator plate and used a zip kit in the reassembly.

Primary issue seemed to be the E clutch.
