$100+ to weld on RE IKON muffler? What am I missing?

I've called several shops and they've all quoted $100 or more to just cut off my stock muffler and weld the IKON on. I was expecting $30-40. What am I missing here? I mean this is Alabama currency, not California..

They're trying to see if they can get away with it
maybe they see the roundel and hear CHA-CHING in their heads?

Tell them that Uncle Stosh sent you and said its gonna be $50

Also, curious... after you get the IKON on, there is going to be slightly better flow right... does your PBX just re-map or just handle it? or whats the scoop here? (After I toss an exhaust and intake on my next step is PBX) I'm guessing this is pry a non-issue right.

The PBX will do nothing but remap the throttle. Unless you get a full on tune(AA, Eurocharge, etc etc) the gains with an exhaust/intake will be very minimal.

PBX actually does advance ignition timing and fuel for very minimal gains - 5hp on a stock 328i and 10hp on a stock 330i, according to their dyno sheets. Nothing you'd really notice though. The biggest help is the throttle remap. Plus this is just a muffler with stock piping on a N/A engine - not gonna make any difference anyway. It's purely just for the sound.

The pbx, the throttle remap makes it feel like a completely different car. It sounds great paired with an exhaust cuz your car revs different with the remap.

Ikon with res delete = drooool

$100 seems about accurate. I was quoted $90 to chop off my muffler and put my own tips on. I negotiated down to $75. Alot of people have paid up to $300 and I'm sure those shops also do a good job. It all depends on where you take it and what their labor rate is. I didn't feel like something simple like chopping the muffler off was worth me paying the higher labor rate so I took it to a cheaper shop. Something more important like body work? Probably the higher rate would be the safer bet.

Thanks for the reply. There's a speed shop in town who I know does good work. They're $100/hr and said it would take about an hour if it's straight forward. I don't see how it would take an hour, but we'll see. I'll try to set an appointment this Saturday to do it.

100 sounds about right, most shops will try to charge you 1hour of labor.

Ross- the custom shop that installed that muffler on my car charged $75.

That included expanding the muffler inlet so that it slipped over the midpipe by about 1" & welding...

Jay, sent you a PM with this pic. For everyone else, I got it installed Saturday for $90. He did a great job so I can't complain. Enough of a difference inside the car with windows up, and a very nice deep sound with windows down or outside the car. I love it.

Got it - they did a great job of aligning the tips, glad you're happy with the sound
