Dinan stg1 requires nothing extra, stg 2 requires you at least have the factory oil cooler, stg3 requires their oil cooler and fmic. I currently have stg2 and it's awsome. Easier to drive than stock due to the smoother boost curve. I got it for a few reasons: 1)didn't care for messing with the ecu 2) don't really care about switching maps 3) it went on "sale" at the time I was looking. I looked at all the tunes and even had the sstt before the stg2 tune and I'm very happy with it. I might have gone with the giac but there isn't a local giac dealer/tuner,they both look very similar. The jb and the procede are stronger tunes, but is your car a daily driver or weekend drag warrior? I honestly feel that the dinan was a good compromise between the 2.

Basically if you're planning on a BMW CPO warranty, BMW PPK is your only choice. You also can't use Dinan if you need alternative maps for race gas or catless exhaust, or if the price is more than your wife will allow.

Sir,

Thanks for your detailed response. I guess my only question now is does the $2199 for stage 2 on Dinan's website include installation? I am getting conflicting messages from my research.

And lastly, if Dinan did go belly up, would BMW potentially screw folks who purchased their parts? I guess you wouldn't know that for sure, but there would have to be some sort of grandfathering Dinan customers into warranty coverage.

The last thing I want is a problem and BMW saying they no longer honor their Dinan partnership.

Thanks for all the responses gents.

Another question: How was the install process? I read your ECU has to be shipped to Dinan in CA? What is that? I was thinking I could walk into my dealer, buy the stage 2, and schedule a date for install...only being without the car 1-2 days. Is it a longer process?

I am not closed to exploring the BMW PPK more, but that's even more expensive than Dinan stage 2, so I need some additional data/opinions. I did see some dyno results of the BMW PPK that indicated the 20hp gain was underrated.

There is a labour charge above the cost of the flash which could be about $200 or so.

This depends on your Dinan dealer. Some dealers have the flashloader in house so they can flash your car at the dealership and it might take maybe 2 hours at the maximum. In other instances, the dealership will ship your ECU to dinan to get flashed and it could take upto 2 days to get it back.

Most Dinan dealers can do the flash on site. It's $130 install at Tischer BMW for example. The price of the tune is 20% off until April 30.

Does anyone know what the prices are for Stage 1 & 2 with the discount? I was just on the Dinan site and Stage 1 is still $1695

and one more question..... what's of more value to you... a Car that has a CPO designation on it, or perhaps getting a Dinan tune (Stage 1) for me to get an additional 60HP kick and loosing the additional coverage?

ill tell u this tho much stg isnt a slow poke, if u want a dyno queen get jb or v3 or 4 (whatever the hell the new one is). ive had stg2 for 3 years and its still fun and more than enough for the streets to handle. i dont have to worry about my warranty and a big kicker for me was that im not over exerting the powertrain. i plan to keep the car for a long while so dinan worked for me
+1

Up till the end of the month just take 20% off whatever is listed on the dinan site. Install takes about an hr and price will probably be an hr labor charge. As far as the ecu it depends if you have the dme80 or dme81. 81 is newer and I believe needs to be shipped to dinan which is located in Ca. As far as warranty goes I know dinan recently paid for a dinan modded V8 to be shipped from australia to be fixed by them personally because the local shop couldn't fix it. I figured the extra 1k was a safer investment in the long run.

1699 * .8 = 1359.20
2199 * .8 = 1759.20

Everyone answering in this thread already decided not to worry about the CPO warranty.

Do you maintain the factory scheduled maintenance (oil changes, etc) with the Dinan stage 2 kit?

I just booked a work order for Stage 1. The exhaust w black tips is on sale too! Cool, but I'd be sleeping in my car afterwards. Can't hide that kind of purchase. Regarding my CPO status, yep, will probably loose that. You'd think at my age I'd be more forward thinking and recognize that benefit. Too bad 60+ horses is the only thing that matters

even if Dinan were to go belly up (which I seriously doubt would happen) the warranty would have to be ackowledged due to legalities. This would be the same with any company.

The cost covers installation as well as up to 2 reflashes due to BMW updates being installed.

When the car is in for service I might allow the oil change or most recently, the 30k service.

I normally change/use my own oil which in no way conflicts with Dinan warranty (that I know of).

The labor cost will equal to the quoted Dinan price.

FYI,

the BMW ppk is/has only become available due to the fact that BMW has lost untold amounts of money to Dinan in aftermarket tuning/parts.

BMW is wanting to sever ties & so they become an aftermarket competitor to Dinan.

Any details on their contract agreement?

Just go for the stage 2, you won't regret it. Dont waste your time or money for the stage 1. The install can be done at the dealer in about an hour or two. They will charge you normal labor rates, mine was $100 and some change. I schedule my oil changes about every 7000 miles. BMW pays for one, I pay for the next. There has been zero problems with anything.
