320 changing front discs

Hi all,

Am going to tackle this task at the weekend. I have the discs, pads, and sensor, and a few questions:

1) Do you need to remove the caliper to get the disc off?
2) Do you need to Copperslip the back of the pads to avoid squeal (and is this best practice or best avoided)?
3) Am I missing any other items?

I did this job

1) I did
2) don't know if you need to but again I did because I always do
3) that depends on what you know.

I've changed discs and pads on other cars before though.

I can't see how it would be possible to remove the disc without removing the caliper and hanging it (not by the prake pipe....) out of the way. It's an easy job though.

As xenon says and you'll know yourself from having done the same job on other cars, It's an easy enough job. The only problem I came across was the disc bolts being practically welded in place due to rust and years of brake dust. I had to borrow an impact driver to get the discs off.

Definitely agree with the silver smoothrite on the bell of the new disc; degrease it first mind.

Yes.
No, they should have soft blacksqueal pads attached to them.
You might need to know how to reset the service indicator for the pad wear.
You have the torque settings for the bolts?
The 335i caliper bolts were about 50lbs/ft IIRC

Most important is to THOROUGHLY wire brush and clean the hubs and new disk inside.
Check the runout is <0.2mm with a DTI.

Thanks guys - glad you mentioned the smoothrite.
I need to go and buy a new torque wrench though - never lend things to people, you never get them back and your memory fades as to who you lent it to!
As for replacing a disc without removing the caliper - you could do this on the Elise by removing both sets of pads from the AP caliper - it gave you enough room to angle the old disc out and a new one in (but was tight though!). I'll be dropping the caliper on the BMW though.
