i replaced my stock mufflers with some magnaflows for 150 bucks and they sound great. at the end of the day, youre only going to get so much sound out of the mufflers before its either too loud with a lot of drone, or very "tinny". i tried a muffler delete at first, and that was terrible. for 150, im very happy with my exhaust

Yeah I've heard a few magna flow universal muffs on a few 335s and I didn't really like the sound. I'm going for the same sound the BMW performance exhaust offers...

Did people notice that the PE is also a weight reduction. This might indicate a different buildup / material.

Yeah most likely a few pounds nothing more. No flap. No mini resonator for the extra exhaust flow when the flap is closed. Less packing inside.

Also I'm pretty sure the PE is made by the same company. It's the same design and materials. With different tips, the PE tips imo don't even look good. I fully polished my oem tips and I think it looks better. BMW puts there BMW performance stamp on there for more of a exclusive look I guess. I just can't justify paying 1400 for mufflers. I can afford it but still, i was going to go with after market but i just love how minimal the drone is... I'm doing the same to my e60 M5 once this is done...

PEs are stamped made in the UK.

Have any of you seen this done on a 135i? I'm debating on giving it a shot since I have a welder and a used stock 135i exhaust can be found for around $100.

I would look into the material the exhaust is made of and which type of welder you need (MIG or TIG) otherwise you will just burn through when you try to lay down a bead.

Awesome!

Did you just swap the perforated pipes with straight pipes? Remove any packing? etc?

It seems to me that taking out all the packing and swapping perforated pipes for solid ones, functionally leaves you with a muffler delete that looks like stock mufflers.

AFAIK, there is no difference in restriction between a perforated straight pipe and a solid one. Think "Cherry Bomb".

Not certain about the Helmholtz resonators, but I doubt they create much restriction. Notice Dinan is using them in their exhaust.

I would definitely like to hear more exhaust sound from my 335. But I'd also like some increase in flow. And yes, a stock appearance would be desirable in PRC (People's Republic of California). If you can get the performance without drawing too much attention then all the better.

This makes me think about the 10 or so different exhaust configurations that I tried on my first generation Mazda RX-7. At one point I had headers, two straight pipe mufflers in tandem, and a Supertrapp with 18 discs. Basically straight exhaust with 3 perforated pipes and a "sound diffuser" at the outlet. Full throttle through a highway underpass sounded like a swarm of killer bees was chasing the car down.

So I understand the idea is to go for a PE sound which I have never heard but something comes to mind.

In my old mustang world you had SLP loudmouth series mufflers(resonators)

The louder version was completely flow through
see here for pic

Then you had the quieter more refined loudmouth 2 version
See here for pic

So I wonder if what the speculations are you leave the one perforated pipe, then cut out the little catalytic looking thing and add another perforated pipe and then pack the rest of the open space of the muffler with packing?
