Has a dealer given anyone a problem with having a BMS single filter on their car?

Bumping a "semi-old" thread. I recently sold my vehicle, and he dropped the car off for a potential mis-fire he was having. He was told that the vehicle's ECU Warranty was voided due to tune. I never had an ECU tune... any suggestions on what and who I need to talk to to rectify this situation? The car is currently at the dealer (same dealer I went to when I owned it). I was never made aware of the situation from the dealer when I owned the vehicle.

While we on warrany/jb3 relationship subject I have a quick question. Soon I will be taken my car for first scheduled service (15000 miles). I have jb3 on. I think this service includes only oil change and HVAC filter change (I might be wrong). Should I take jb3 of just for this service? Thanks

I suppose you need to find out what they are basing that information on. If you never tuned the car, yet they say it was tuned, there has to be an explanation. Maybe the guy who purchased it put something on it and isn't telling you.

In the BMW system it's states that the "note" was taken during a service while I still had the car.

This almost certainly means that you had a fault code (suggesting the presence of a tuning device) logged in the DME while you had the car (possibly indicated by the mileage stamp), and this code was read/found when it went in for service with the new owner. I'm not sure there's much you can do about it (beg the SA for coverage?) since they'll have all of this documented.

If they never notified you about this while you owned the car, you should be able to get this handled. It definately won't be easy though. I'm assuming you had the car advertised as having the remaining factory warranty which unfortunately drags you into the problem.

Good luck with this one. I've been lucky with my car, but hearing all this crap about warranty claims makes me not want to buy a new BMW ever again.

I ended up going with the BMW CPO warranty.
I'm covered until 100k miles with a $50 deductible.

No warranty work has been denied. But I have declared my powertrain warranty to be voided. Even disclosed modifications to SA in an attempt to preserve some integrity. I moddified the vehicle and I will be honest about it. It is for the dealer then to decide if they will make any repairs if needed. If they don't, we part as friends and I put my wrenching gloves on.

This removes some weight from my shoulders and I sleep a little better at night.

No, thats the "extended maintenance" which can also be extended to 100,000 miles, but is not included as part of the CPO or extended warranty.

So are you saying that everytime you use the Bt Scan Tool that the car data logs the access to the ecu? That means the dealer will know you have accessed the computer to potentially clear codes?

no i think he means once a dealer flags u as having modifications and denying warranty work, its shared on their network and every time your VIN comes up in other dealers they know u had the issue.

You can buy the CPO warranty up to 60k miles, which will then last you until 100k miles.

This is a bit of a worn out topic that has been discussed many times over the past several years.

In general BMW is pretty damn straightforward in regard to mods and tuning. If the mod does something that could mess with the specs and there is a problem in that area you are likely to get warranty coverage denied. Intake, downpipes, tune, etc. can all affect engine parts including HPFPs, turbos, etc.

Most instances of warranty denial get negotiated. OEM parts are put back in and everybody is happy. When really bad things happen, arrangements are often made that involve not talking about the event. So don't expect folks that have had warranty issues to be blabbing about them online. Second point is that it is a good idea to be on good terms with your dealer, they can be very helpful. But when your car is hooked up to the computer, there is a lot of data that is sent to Munich. And that data can indicate a lot of things about your car and what you have been doing with it. To the best of my knowledge this is not intended as a mod witch hunt by BMW AG. But dealers can't save your butt if AG or NA get a whiff of mod related problems.

Bottom line: if you use a tune and have engine problems, don't expect BMW to fix it for free. They are pretty liberal in regard to HPFP coverage now. But if there are clear consequences from tune use that result in specific failures, don't expect such generosity in the future.
