Heard a loud pop front left side now suspension low

Hi Guys,

While driving this morning to work I heard a loud pop on the driver side of the car, immediately after the car felt wobbly. Drove about 10 minutes, when I stopped I noticed the car on the front driver side is low, almost no gap between tire and fender. The tires are all good.

I guess something broke, I'm taking it to a garage ASAP but I want to get an idea of what it might be and the costs associated? I'll know once the car is on the left I guess.

110k KM '08 335XI.

Thanks guys.

Might be the spring... not that costly to replace but the labor will be lol

I'll take quick pictures during lunch hour to share with you guys for further details.

I don't know much about the inner workings of the car so any info is much appreciated before I take it to an independent garage. Why would the labour be expensive on changing springs? Tedious job?

If it is just the springs, what should I be expecting in terms of cost including labour?

Thanks guys.

Depends on the shop you take it to. You should be able to source a replacement spring on the forum here at a much lower price than buying 'new'

This would involve dropping the front strut, perhaps using a spring compressor to get the spring off, and then using the compressor again to get the other one on, re installing, and then you will also need an alignment done.

Depending on the shop, shouldn't be more than 2 hours labor to do (not including the alignment).

So.....

$200 labor
cost of the springs
cost for alignment

Should be out the door under $400-$500 (depending on price of springs)

As long as there's no damage to other components it shouldnt take a shop more than an hour to take the old spring off and put the new one on. You can probably get a used spring for like $50 and maybe $100 in labor. An alignment wouldn't be a bad idea especially if that was the cause of the spring breaking in the first place

Hoping it's only the springs at this point and nothing else.

How can alignment cause the spring to snap?

I was going to say the same about the blown tire.
It happen to me last summer, front passenger spring broke and while I was driving to the garage spring cut the tire. I would get it towed if you have free road side coverage like CAA.

And keep in mind that springs should be replaced in pairs. Same reason you replace blown tire in pairs.
