Uh, before I go to the reasonable process of actually reading the fine print, what is the executive summary (Cliff Notes or EW/EM for Dummies) difference between the EW and EM, which is an increasingly likely purchase for moi, albeit still 38k or 38 months away?

Extended Warranty covers repairs to a specified set of components (varies based on level), similar to the factory warranty. Extended Maintenance includes scheduled maintenance items (oil changes, brakes, etc) like the factory maintenance plan.

In my case, I bought the Extended Warranty because repairs can get pretty pricey, the emissions system is rather new and relatively unproven, and a replacement engine (for a worst-case example) is $22k IIRC. I skipped the Extended Maintenance since I would essentially be paying $3k for two oil changes, a brake job, and 4 sets of windshield wipers.

Same here, did the extended warranty, skipped the extended maintenance. Although I'm getting older, still can do the marjority of my own maintenance. But I may pay the dealer to do the fuel filter when the time comes. Can be messy, smelly, plus I can't prime the fuel system to protect the HPFP.

Hmmm. The devil is in the details. How come cars can't be as easy to work on as they were when we were younger. I too hate to be out in my cold garage doing stuff like the old days, plus those no-seeums bite me incessantly. But you are right...that fuel filter could be messy. What else is not so easy?

I've almost always had luck with a private German car specialist to take care of my Mercedes/Porsche/BMW. You could say they become family to me! I get better than dealer service for about the same price usually.

My current mechanic, who happens to be from Bavaria (!) loves my car and is ready to buy it from me when I'm done with it. He recommended that I buy the extended warranty and even had a different company in mind than BMW to buy it from.

We shall see. I have added up the "savings" of me not purchasing extended warranties over the years and I am ahead by about $18-20,000 easily.

Europeans do not overstress their cars it seems as do Americans, and this is how I drive also. Sure, I gun it on occasion, and this is probably good for the car, but never when the engine is cold or in need of an oil change etc. I baby the brakes and transmission, keep up with top maintenance, and do as much of it myself to guarantee best practice. I also keep cars way past 100,000 miles which is when most of the expensive repairs happen. This makes the warranties less effective.

But the BMW is a bit different in that it is a more complex design from a manufacturer that is not as fanatical about over-engineering as are Porsche and Mercedes. So I may decide to go for the extended warranty.

One final thing to consider: you appear to be in Maryland, which is a CA Emissions Warranty state. Your emissions systems should be covered to 7/70K because of that (although heavens know which components those are, as BMW doesn't publish a list, the service advisors are clueless, and you may have to fight to get them to cover items like I did.)

For my purposes, since I drive 18K+ a year, the extended warranty ($2100-$2500 for 6Y/100K) would essentially cover only an additional year (of the components I figured would most likely break), so I didn't buy it. YMMV, and be sure to check the exclusions of CA Warranty (have to buy and license the car in Maryland, etc.)

Note that there's also an 8/80K warranty on some "emissions components", including the catalyst, DDE (ECU) and OBD system. Not very helpful in most cases, unfortunately.

You will be dealing with a business manager. They'll look at your kilometres/miles and go by that.

I would get quotes from various dealers because you CAN haggle when it comes to what you pay for extended warranty.

Did you end up buying the extended warranty? My warranty will expire January 2015, or probably sooner when i get to the mileage. I currently have 32k miles on my 335d. What prices did you guys get on your extended warranty? Did you look into any 3rd party warranties?

Here's a link to a dealer in California that seems to always offer the best price on BMW extended warranties. They are a participant on this and other BMW boards, and every account of dealing with these guys I've read from other members has been positive.

My understanding is that you can buy the BMW warranty anywhere (from any dealer, regardless of locale), and BMW will treat it the same; so, as far as I can tell, it's a buyer's market, and you just have to take some time to compare quotes.

I'm not quite to the 4 year threshold yet, but I expect to use these guys as my price leader when the time comes. If my local dealer won't match their price, then they will get my business.

So I am at 38k miles now and just sent an email to Tischer BMW and the one in the link above. Well see what they come back with. I would want the 6Year/100k mile platinum warranty. I am thinking it may be better to just sell the car
