Mickey Mouse flange just failed.

Drove home from work, stopped at store 3/8 of a mile from house and came home to giant coolant puddle, Limped car the short distance now to find one in stock as car is my daily and both E30's are non registered right now. I'd drive the E36 M3 but needs a sticker.

When it rains it pours.

I used to think it was called the Mickey Mouse flange because it was a shitty design and failed frequently. I now know it’s because it actually looks like Mickey.

Good luck with the fix! I have one of the aluminum replacement flanges on hand but have yet to install it.

I am driving down to FCP tomorrow to pick it up as I can't wait the extra day and while I'm at it I'll get my VCG and a set of coils.

Turns out O'reily's has the Rein aluminium micky mouse flange and has the hose attached, instead of doing 2.5 hours of driving I ordered it that way.

If you’re like me, it looked normal on the outside and rotting on the inside.

Mine looked fine and completely crumbled when I replaced it. I mean crumbled, I tool the bolt off and the head came off with the rest left in the engine and I had to eventually just get it out with a nylon brush because using a pic would just scrape out little bits at a time.

The plastic was coated in a brown goo that had the color of a crema on espresso. All of the plastic fittings I pulled had this brown goo in their seams, coating the inside, etc. I ended up replacing everything after that, including the radiator because I was worried I might have damaged it removing the radiator hoses (everything was GLUED on).

At this point Im going on a war against hot plastics in my car. Seeing all of these caps break, fittings crumble, floats breaking off, etc. I really dont want a relatively cheap piece of plastic stranding me.

Yeah, one would have thought BMW learned from the whole Plastic is better in the E36's but after doing some reading it was the same in the E46's as well.

Interesting. AFAIK mine is original and “looks okay” so I’ve just kept the replacement part on standby. Maybe I’ll get ahead of that one and preempt the failure by replacing it now.

Last November, I did the VCG and had the flange in the toolkit. I looked under the flange and there was a little road grime but no oil or coolant. Earlier in the spring, I went out and swapped it out and it still looked good until I actually pulled it off. The flange rots from the inside out and I was happy that it came out in two pieces.

Sounds good! Hose looks original but I my understanding is that it’s not the weak link here.

My cooling system is for an automatic car but I’ve now got a manual, plus I have a very small coolant leak from what I believe is the rad, so I’ll probably order some parts and do a day of cooling system overhaul here soon. Hopefully it’s okay until then!

Yeah Oreilly's actually has a lot of these random parts and hoses that break on our cars(and usually in stock around me), they have saved me from being carless for a few days/week plenty of times now.

124K so it served it's time. Wasn't that bad of a job and I had an excuse to spend time cleaning the engine bay.

I will say I finished just in nick of time as monster thunder storm rolled in as I was putting away tools and cleaning the driveway. Sprayed the coolant spill with simple green and tried to clean up as best as possible.

I'm curious about your thoughts on the Happy Robot mod

Had to look that one up!

Initially I thought it was a robot that services you while you drive, but again… turns out it’s very literal and has no sexual component to it whatsoever. Lame.

Did O'Reilly have an aluminum flange with the hose already attached? If so that's awesome and I want that. When I installed the Aluminum flange on my 325 I had to cut the band clamp off a new hose and I was worried I nicked the hose and weakened it.

When I did my water pump and got everything bolted back up and bled the system, I had a leak from that little U-shaped hose that attaches to the pump. The hose had a tiny split. Not wanting to wait, I called several local shops and O'Reilly was the only one that had it in stock.

Rein and Uro both have the hose AND an aluminum flange, about $16. I only go the flange because I did not want to bother reaching down to the thermostat area. Parts stores can order it, about $24.

I'm pretty sure they did, or atleast I saw it in stock at my store on their website when I purchased another hose for a friends car. I actually got my flange from ebay before I found out o'reilly had a bunch of stuff like this and had to cut the band off the stock hose also.

I ordered it viz their webpage and was dropped at my local store. It was their same day so another store must have had it in stock or their warehouse had it. I wanted a new hose as mine was sorta sad looking after closer inspection when I removed everything.
