Intake coupler kits / Silencer delete

Do we have any replacing the gaudy intake silencer and accordion style connection?

The stock air housing is more than capable of feeding cold air to the engine IMO.

This unit is nice, gets rid of the restrictions and will deliver some decent sound but its not sealed:

Attractive design, cold air box style box, I don't know if those two vent cuts out are really needed and they kind of defeat the purpose of a "sealed" type design. $500 is a bit much for an airbox w/a cone filter.

I'm trying to put together a basic set-up that flows a bit better than stock, as these intakes do but the pricing is definitely a little crazy.

-Drop-in "free-flowing filter
-Coupler kit removing silencer/accordion style connections
-Kidney grill scoops

Shouldn't be $400 to put this together haha but I guess that's apart of the BMW parts buying experience like that $1200 factory exhaust set-up

I think I'll work on creating my own, some fine tuning and I think I'll get it sounding exactly like I want.....

Appreciate any help on the intake questions!

That's usually the trick with most set-ups, I didn't even think about that. I'll go ahead and start w/the drop-in & charcoal delete then....maybe some intake scoops just the for fun of it. Thanks for the input!

You might be able to buy some tubing to replace the accordion intake tubing, I'm sure K&N or AFE or even an auto parts store has some you can buy without getting an entire kit

Also +1 for charcoal delete

Nice idea... I think. what exactly are you getting rid of? What's the "silencer?"

The afe sealed sounds pretty good. The 2 vents are behind and close to the headlight so i dont think it would soak in heat. As for the price, you can look for used one as well. I bought mine $300 shipped.

I'd hope so, some get a little reluctant on helping out with our little "small projects," only issue would be the MAF placement. As a tuner myself, I know MAF placement is critical to performance and most intake changes should be tuned for as small changes to the airflow can throw reading to the MAF which throw off fuel trims in a big way....hence why you see many people lose HP or not see any gains at all after an intake mod.

I'm searching for some tubing right now, possibly I can weld in something but I gotta kind of weigh out the checks & balances here...we're talking about a few HP.

It'd be mainly just an ideal set-up for "smoother" airflow, in efforts to at more so further help that throttle response.

I'd definitely pay that price...it's hard to find them at that price $300 its definitely the nicest kit on the market.

MAF is mounted in the filter box, so if you end up keeping your rear filter housing, you're fine. You could do a Euro mod, just put a cone filter in place of the drop in one but it requires custom modding, there's a DIY or thread on it kicking around somewhere

This is what I'd recommend. Or If your not feeling crafty, just do a KN drop in. Charcoal delete is negligible.

I'll look into the Euro box mod, I won't concentrate too much efforts on actual intake side of things as the manifold & tune are the biggest known restrictions thus far. I placed an order on the Scuba scoops last night, I'll grab a K&N today.

I'm going to throw some fiberglass over the Scuba scoops making the curve as smooth as possible just for the sake of it, yea its not a cylinder head but "flow characteristics 101" say sharp bends are a no-no, not that it'd even make more of a difference possibly, I'm just bored.

That intake is by far the cheapest set-up I've seen, I believe the eBay kit is priced @ $480 because they include the "scoops" with it, see where that extra $100 comes from. Honestly, I think I'd wait to come across that kit in the markets place selling for about $250ish.

There's also been the silencer deletes but I need to know the size of the plugs used by those guys.

Food for thought... You might want to add some metal mesh at the front of the intake just after the scoops, I've heard they funnel all kinds of goodies into the filter.

I was just thinking about asking that question! I'm coming up today from work and some guy kind of cuts me with a ton of gravel in the road and it just starts chunking all kinds of debris and little pebbles, I'm almost lost it....

Then I thought, I wonder if those scoops would have sucked any of that in

A durable filter is probably a must, I'd actually be suprised if most anything would actually make its way up and to the filter haha

Overall, from the looks of behind the radiator and the grill of my vehicle....I haven't seen many marks from debris or an abundance of bugs back there.

my solution to this (not very elegant of one) was to just cut out the silencer and glue in a rubber stopper that fit well.. It made a little sound difference but not much. Before that I had already done the carbon delete and k&n drop in mod. BTW i am pretty sure in the initial picture the tube is connected upside-down. And as for scoops, I havent noticed too much shit getting into my airbox. the grills keep most of it out i guess. maybe more bugs than before but not much else

Interesting about the scoops - I cant speak from first hand experience just read that some people got sticks, sand, dirt, large bugs, etc collecting in the filter box. Take it with a grain of salt i guess lol.

Cold air intakes are the best, the stock one is actually real good but if you want more air flow...get the euro intake or do a ramp air intake that utilize the air ducts from the bottom of bumper

I keep hearing about this euro box mod, I'm going to have to check more in to this...

I'm thinking about just take that "front piece" of the intake right above the gills, remove it, then fiberglass a nice and smooth duct tract so to speak. Making it one unit...similar to that Gruppe M intake I suppose.

...because $1k for an intake...omg
