Mod maintenance: Charge Pipe and sensor cleaning
I've recently notice my N55 has been performing
quiet sluggishly. Daily driving has been less than thrilling, the bimmer feels slow when flooring it. During a couple of track events, on the straight aways the car doesn't feel like it did before. Boosting has not been optimal. The bimmer's at bout 50k i'm FBO with Procede Rev2.5 map 1108 no meth. Here's what I found when checking up on my mods - An oily mess on the charge pipe arm going to the t-body!!! The oil residue was on the charge pipe, the DME wires, the DME board, on the t-body -- Immediately, problem found. oily residue - all around the charge pipe started to clean the outside but u can see the inside is oily - the sensor needs cleaning I removed the charge pipe, wiped down everything, removed the sensor shot it with some crc cleaner. Clear'd the tune did a run and was very happy. The N55 boost'd properly on Map 1 and 2. Huge difference The CP design using the C-Clip is prone to leakage as you can see. I would recommend to you guys out there to do some regular maintenance and clean ur CP, CP sensor, MAF sensor as well. I'm not knocking ER's CP, just sharing with you how it's been holding up. In the later day i'm going try to add a thin silicone hose between the CP and t-body. To help prevent any extreme oily messes. Any of you have similar experience post up. And on a side note - to continue on maintenance. on the list to clean is the intake manifold / walnut shell blasting. Will post pictures soon.

Any idea where the oily residue came from?

Thanks for the heads up! I will check mine.
The CP design that use the C-Clip might be prone to leakage, but at least you actually SEE the mess, I have the Vishnu CP, its certainly 100% sealed but the sensor might be covered with oil... I'll have a look. Very interested in the intake manifold pics after 50k miles, the n55 is supposed to be a bit better on that subject (supposed better crankcase ventilation system). |

Not suprised I've seen this happen before using these types of aftermarket CP.
Utilizing the factory Tb connection. I've seen a n54 member put a silicone coupler and a T-bolt clamp over the part of the CP that connects to the TB. To stop the leakage |

Wouldn't this happen with a stock CP as well?

Hey hetzle -
i've seen oil build up from the front mount intercooler as well both n54 and n55, it's common. the build up is most likely from the turbo - maybe someone can chime in with details. btw, sorry to hear bout ur botch'd tune install. read ur post. Quote:
Diff check - it made a big difference.. the Vishnu CP, with it's silicone hose to the T-body (design) is a guaranteed seal - only way air will seap through is if it pops off or u got a leak somewhere else. I've been wanting to check out the valves - soon enough i'll post up some pics - also the n55 valve train - i may have some news and issues. do you know of any know problems on the boards from a member?

It is called blow by and a catch can added to the system would take care of this.

right, happens in all turbo cars. You can buy a catch can to catch most of this oil before it enters the intercooler. If your TB looks like that, can you imagine what your IC looks like?

I would check it atleast 1 a month and empty it out. Depends on driving styles, if you track it at all, they you will need to check it at the end of each day after you run your sessions.
