Combox Retrofit Attempt! - Too Excited! thank you -=[Patryk@BimmerTech]=-...

Update:

Just chatted with Patryk@BimmerTech.

LOL!

I am so surprised I got some of the stuff working...there is still a lot of work to do. I mis-plugged a connector and there is more wiring.

Patryk@BimmerTech has been super patient with all my questions. What is especially nice is how clear and concise he is with his directions. Very calming--you can feel his confidence, organization, and most importantly, his experience. He always knows the next step and can predict your questions before you even ask! Ya! I'm srs!! This is a stark contrast to my previous experience with another vendor...over there I felt left-in-the-dark, uninformed, and clueless.

I'll be making a new thread once everything is actually, fully installed...

Original Post

I was at a conference when my combox arrived in the mail so I put it on hold at the nearest FedEx facility until I got back.

I got back today and I couldn't wait!

So I pulled out my TCU, plugged in the MEDIA (it's not hard to figure where the main cables go, things only go in one way, and you can just copy off the old TCU format).

Next was coding...and wala!!~~

To be resolved..
  1. I still don't know where some of the leftover TCU cables go -- I know some must belong to the now defunct BMW Assist, but not sure which ones..
  2. I don't know how to route my 6FL to the center console -- right now my 6FL is just chillin' in the trunk lol!!
  3. Have not tried the internet functions...I think I need some bluetooth connectivity with MyWi...will try it out.
  4. text-to-speech -- does not speak street names in navigation-- it's supposed to now, right?
  5. I have a big 'ol SOS not available error whenever I start the car...hahahaha

hopefully when Patryk@BimmerTech gets online I'll be able to figure the rest of the wiring and he'll remote to me and smooth out all the kinks!!

The actual Combox installation was SUPER EASY thanks to Patryk@BimmerTech's proprietary PNP harness! Even I could do it!! I encourage anyone who is even thinking about doing it to pull trigger immediately!! DEWWWW ITTTT!!

Full write up soon! Just too excited had to share!!

and sorry for crappy pics! My hands were shaking from excitement...

Well I was wondering why I still had functionality despite seemingly improper installation. I read the BMW Combox Technical training PDF and learned a lot.

Patryk@BimmerTech's method is very innovative. Basically using "A" hardware to get upgraded "B" results. All with OEM parts.

Yes...I'm being intentionally vague...why?
  • in case I have no idea what I am talking about
  • protect Patryk@BimmerTech's proprietary research/methodology

Yeah! I love the Combox so far. Still too lazy to finish the installation though haha.

Send Patryk@BimmerTech a PM!

I lost BMW Assist functionality. All BlueTooth functions are retained and some new ones are added (A2DP, for example).

Today I decided to give a shot at the 6FL rear wiring. I am REALLY sick of opening my trunk and plugging in my iPhone before I get into the car

How to Rewire? Well I did a search on e90post for 6FL Retrofit, and found this post by Technic:

It's also attached below. I took a gander at the PDF and basically it tells you to route it through the side of the car.

Sounds good. But just one thing...the rear seats are in the way.

So let's break it down

Remove all your Stuff from the Trunk.

Pick a side to route the cable. Orthodox way is on the left. I found the right side easier for whatever reason. I'm right handed, that's probably why.

Remove the black trunk liner plugs. They just pop up with a trim removal kit or screw driver. You will need to remove two of them, then just push the trunk liner down.

Next, remove the bottom half of the rear seat. Just lift up and it pops off. Very simple.

Then, get a T-50 screw driver and remove the two center bolts. They are tucked in, so you will have to lift up the seat cushion a little to reach.

Next,

It´s a so called emergency release latch (don´t ask me why it´s called that since there still are the bolts at the lower part of the seat). That release latch is really hard to find and even after you´ve found it it´s really hard to figure out what to move where, but once you´ve done it, it´s easy.

I made a video:

Once you have remove the latches, just pull the rear seat towards you and it will give way.

You will now see a clear gap from the trunk to the rear compartment. Reroute your wire

At least my wire is now in the cabin. Here is how it looks

I think I need a T-30 to continue with the 6FL rerouting. So once I get that I'll give another update

Quick Update:

Had some time today. Got rid of my SOS Malfunction. Naturally I don't have BMW Assist any more so I modified my vehicle order to reflect this.

Coded a few modules and SOS Malfunction went away.

Still need to go to hardware store to find that torx bit so I can continue my 6FL installation

Yay! I got Pandora working. It was really super easy to do haha.

I did a google search on Pandora and 6NR...and guess what...I stumbled across yet another post by Technic. Haha that guy is such a huge boon to the community.

sorry no pics of iDrive cause when I open the camera app on my iPhone, everything disappears

Ok I've had my bit of fun. Once I get the rest of stuff wired I'm gonna leave the coding to the expert, aka Patryk@BimmerTech

Stay tuned!!

What parts did you buy to wire it without using baseplate? I bought AV port but did you hook it into CIC? You run blue cable to center console for aux/usb but then what do you do after that.

Hey! I would love to help you, but I purchased the retrofit from Patryk@BimmerTech.

I am a big DIY fanatic, but even so, it is unfair to Patryk@BimmerTech if I start sharing part #s. And for such a big DIY supporter to show this much loyalty to a vendor, you can only imagine how fantastic Patryk@BimmerTech's service is

The part numbers aren't secret and neither is this retrofit. I am a big supporter of what Patryk has to offer, but I was only asking for some clarifying questions. I could easily post the pin out for the harness and diagrams but I am not looking to do anything like that but just need some help. I don't think that's against any rules or what he has to offer.

Hi!

That wiring is only for the plug-in functionality. Since I'm not home, why don't you just follow what I did here. You'll have everything but plug-in. I haven't gotten the internet stuff working but I'm pretty sure that's an issue with bluetooth tethering.

There is a lot to enjoy! I don't even miss the plug-in which is why I am dragging my feet with this retrofit haha.

Also I'm not sure which diagram you were referring to, but the one on page 10 by afsar is flawed

Anyone who needs help with pinout for MULF/TCU into harness without PNP adapter let me know.

I understand this now and it's much easier than I thought.
