Winter Tires

So I just moved to VA, from NYC and its super hilly over here. I'm thinking of purchasing 2 new wheels and 2 winter tires for my car (only putting them on rear tires). Is this the recommended approach?

If so, does anyone know how much OEM or REP OEM rims will cost for a pair?

Also, how much will a pair of good winter tires cost?

Thanks!

It's always best to have the same tires on all four corners. Putting winters only on the drive wheels may even be worse than leaving the summer/all season on all fours, because it upsets the balance of the car and may promote over or understeer.

I can't comment on price since it's been a while since I purchased a set of wheels myself.

Think about what happens when you brake or steer. Snow isn't only a problem accelerating from a stop.

Great video... any chance you could provide us with a good (cheap) winter tire package for 335xi sedan with msport?

Once it gets closer to winter time, say around October or November, Tire Rack will have specials for your car. Make sure you jump on them relatively early, because they've sold out in the past. I've used Dunlop M3 DSST winter performance tires with ASA JH3 wheels (those are photos of my car pre-Blacklines ) for the past three winters, and they've been great. I was very impressed by how Tire Rack shipped so quickly. Their pricing is good, too. No complaints about them from me.

Help support e90post by purchasing at Tire Rack through the link on the forum (see the banner at the top of the "Wheels and Tires Forum"). Also, member Gary@TireRack is an excellent source of information, and you can PM him with questions.

I agree with the other posters-go with all 4. When I purchased my 2006 325i a couple of years ago in November, I purchased a complete set of wheels/snow tires from Tire Rack. Cost about a grand. I chose to not go with run flats, but bought a Continental kit. My cas handles Chicago winters with no problem whatsoever. With traction control and Dunlop Wintersports, the car drives great. Hope this helps.

...trying to be cheap when it comes to tires is foolish. Tirerack has a whole series of videos (part of the link) that explain why AWD by itself won't help if you don't have the proper shoes.

I believe that you have two choices if you live in a climate where there is any chance of snow.

Buy proper snow tires
Stay home on days the roads might be slick

It only takes one snowfall to screw up the bodywork on your car.

Remember that you are not as good of a driver as you think you are and those tires might just get you out of the way of someone who thinks that he's an even better driver...

Find used beater rims... 17 inch

Wrap them in good winters... Blizzaks, dunlops, etc

Leave them OFF until its going to snow. it doesnt take long to spin them off/on with a 17mm lugger.

or just leave them on..

I live in NC, so I run all seasons mostly.

i've had Blizzaks on my Rx8 in NY and my wife used to tool around on them in Edmonton, Canada where it snows A LOT. I swear by winter tires now. I'll pick up a set for my 335i later this year as well. Worth every penny.

Yea I have blizzaks, LM 25-s (non run flat, softer sidewall) that make the car go great in light snow. More then 6-7" your a snow plow and high centering might occur and get stuck in a non-xi, but if its plowed roads, your good to go if you drive it safe and hit the DTC button once.

For me its the other idiots on the road I worry about. Thinking about getting a beater SUV for that.

Is is necessary to put on a set of winters that include tire pressure sensors? What happens if you don't install those on your non-RFT winters? Thanks

I went low-budget, got ASA rims for $79 and Goodyear Ultragrips (I didn't do -1 so I got 225/40-18) with $40 rebate so I came in under $1000. I did NOT get TPMS so that meant my warning was on all winter, no big deal. If I were close enough to home and got a flat, I would simply have my wife come with a summer rim or if that were not possible, repair or replace. Non RFT doesn't worry me....

The one thing I would recommend is anti-seize--I could not get the ASA's off in the spring without a fight.

So if you put non-TPS wheels and tires on it leaves the indicator on all winter... then when you put the TPS wheels back on it automatically goes away again? Thanks.

My Blizzak LM 25's cost $500. You need 4. No if, ands, or but's, about it! Cheaping out and putting two is just as bad as not having them at all.

You are going to have to reset TPMS. Couple of clicks through the OBC or i-drive.

+1 Forgot about that. I've been using anti-seize to swap out my summers/winters, and it makes removing the wheels much easier. One bottle lasts forever.
