Filing pads?
Does anyone use a separate set of pads for track days that they take on and off? Supposedly if you put new pads on old rotors it's possible they will catch the edge of the rotor (where it's not worn) and then destroy the rotor. Anyone had this happen or heard of it?
A supposed solution is to bevel the edge of the pad with a file some to insure they don't catch the edges. Again anyone tried this? Never had issues but now it's making me nervous as I can't really take my car in for service anymore.

Never had issues..but if it makes you feel better..go ahead and file the edges before you install.

They do this at work when we are going through multiple pad compounds on the same set of rotors at a test. I don't know if it's necessary but, that's what they do.
They will also occasionally taper the leading edge of the pad at bottom a little. I'm not sure what's going on there. I'll ask. |

I switch too, and that doesn't sound very likely... Most pads are not abrasive enough to ruin a rotor. Maybe a large sharp chunk, but there is enough pressure (especially with new pads) to make it impossible for a large chunk to fall between the pad and rotor.
I do hate that switching pads tends to lay down deposits that feel like warped rotors... I used to swap pads AND rotors on my e36 m3 and my e46 m3. |

Not in our application. It's hard to hear brakes over a small block turning 10K RPM with an open exhaust and we honestly wouldn't care if you could. I want to say it has something to do with trying to prevent pad taper.
I'll ask Monday. |
